First time since new baggage policy flying with Ryanair , going to London for night with young lad ... rather than pay them 32 euro ( 4X 8 ) thinking of both of us having 2 small bags.. one each obviously ..not sure how small they need to be ? Any thoughts ?

    Their website says the following:

All passengers are entitled to bring 1 small personal bag on board which must fit under the seat in front of you (40cm x 20cm x 25cm). Examples include, handbag, laptop bag and small backpack.

My experience from 6 recent flights: anything with wheels, no matter what the size it seems, goes in the hold. Anything without wheels and is not the size of a grand piano will be let on board. You may be able to place it in the bins but if a priority person needs it for their wheelie bag, you will be asked to put it under the seat in front. Just keep that in mind for what the size is concerned.

I see it's only possible to check in only one 10kg bag. I don't want to pay 40 euro to check in a 20kg bag considering ive already paid to check in 1x 10kg bag.
If I arrive at the gate with a second small bag, would I be able to get it onboard by paying the charge(which I believe to be 10 euro ?) at the gate?

Update : I see now actually the charge at the gate would be 25 :/
