Car needs new engine – sell or fix

    Hi all,

    Looking for some advice.

    I have a 2009 Hyundai i20 with approx. 80,000 miles on it.

It broke down a couple of weeks back and had it owed to my garage. He said it was the timing belt, but that the root cause was an oil blockage in a valve (or something similar). That was replaced and sorted at a cost of €700.

Within an hour of driving it home the same thing happened so I had it towed again, and dropped into the same garage.

He has now rung to say it needs a new engine. One has been identified for €800 with a local dealer and he will do the labour for €400.

I’m reluctant to put another €1200 into it as this would be nearly €2k all in…

I paid €5.5k for it about 4 years ago and judging my CarZone etc it should be worth maybe €4k but has some damage to the bumper so that may knock a bit off.

Ideally I would sell it but would a dealer take it with the existing issues? I presume scrap would get me very little?

    Any thoughts/advice?

    Thanks in advance

If its petrol its worth maybe 2500 tops if the damage is only minor, diesel a little bit more! Worth fixing but I would be questioning what was done for your original 700 and why it happened again, it sounds like the mechanic may have screwed up here.

4yrs and you only spent 5.5k, treat yourself to a new car as it's turned into a money pit.
