Unacceptable work dynamics

    Hi everyone,

Im two years working in my department and about 6 years in the comapany.

Im really having trouble accepting the dynamics of how people are treated in the department im in the last 2 years.

Some of them have been there for 20 odd years and are an older age group then myself. Given this i understand some may feel more comfortable to give out/complain at each other. (However in my opinion I still dont think in a work place we should talk down to anyone.)

They dont seem to understand team work and work very individually and if something is not done correctly are very quick to point a finger and dissacociate themselves with any issue rather than help and support each other.

One colleague seems to receive a lot of back lash from the rest of the team. One day my floor manager made a comment on what she was eating and said "oh whats going down now". and laughed. WTF...how is that ok?

The same colleague, whenever he/she has an work realted issue, the other team members never support him/her and basicly tell that collegue to deal with it. I often hear another colleague making fun of him/her copying typicial phrases he/she may say. Its boarder line bullying in my opinion.

For some colleagues it seems to be ok to go around the office and have a chat with people and take breaks. However when i turn to say anything to the colleague who is treated badly, i can see my floor managers head turn and stare at us. I feel like im in school.

Can i discuss this with main manager(not the floor manager) as i just dont feel i can tolerate it for much longer.

I think you can talk to the main manager. But he probably knows all this is going on and accepts it. So I think have a backup plan. Start applying for other jobs.

I think it’s something I’d mention at a regular 1:1 or similar meeting, poor team work etc.

I wouldn’t go making a thing out of it and having meetings with management about this alone, it will blow up into a huge issue and most likely alienate you as a trouble maker.

Much easier change your situation than change the established culture, unfortunately. I have seen this type of localised culture within a larger organisation and amazingly the majority of people in it are locked into it. I've seen that when this occurs, you tend to have people with many years experience that always work together when new projects arrive.
