Made a mess of my career

I feel like I've made a mess of my career.

I am a social care worker, but each job has managed to burn me out. As a result I don't ever last long before becoming disillusioned and moving on to a new one, and now my CV is starting to suffer.

At this stage I'm thinking maybe I'm in the wrong career, but my empathy and care for other's is definitely my strongest asset and I am most fulfilled when helping people. I can't think of anything else I would be good at to be honest. And now at the age of 29, I feel embarrassed that I've made no real progress in my career and that it's all so unstable. Part of me thinks maybe I just haven't found the right role but part of me also thinks I'm just in the wrong career.

I have no clue what I want to do though. I'd love to be a counsellor/therapist but I'm not mentally ready. I did see a career coach but she was only ok, she helped me understand my strengths but I already had a good understanding of them. It's hard to know what to do.

I really feel for you. Can you pinpoint what is causing the burnout? Is it shiftwork, organisational challenges, service users? I am a social care worker and suffered burn out years ago working in a particularly challenging role. I really enjoyed what I was doing so just looked for a variation of it that was less chaotic. Have you stayed in similar roles or tried different things- like were you in disability residential then moved to disability day service etc.? Have you got a passion in one area, like young people, substance misuse, disability etc.? You can then try different avenues of these areas to see what works. Maybe try volunteering in an area you want to explore as it will give you experience and may open doors for possible jobs. You say you are interested in becoming a therapist, could you look at volunteering on a helpline for Samaritans or Childline? It could give you a feel for the work while you get proper support and supervision.
