Distributing a Set top Box

    Hi

I'm currently using a tiviar box , fantastic bit of kit. I was so impressed I'm thinking of ordering a second one, However I was wondering was this the right approach.

If I wanted to access the box from another room, set up recordings from another room.- would it be better to distribute the HDMI signal from the main box.

Do many folks have a centralised set top box and then distribute the signal via HDMI or HDMI over cat5e or equivalent?

The problem with just 1 central box is that you are limited to the amount of tuners in the box.

So if the box has 2 satellite tuners and a person is watching one and recording another satellite channel in the main room, you may not be able to view in another room as the 2 tuners are used up.

This is why the likes of sky q have upto 8 tuners.

It may not be a problem if it is just for your own use but with a family you would need to have a better solution.

Some people on here have a setup done where they have everything fed into a central system and then ran to rooms over cat 5 or 6 ethernet cable. I don't know enough on it but they might comment on their setup.

With the second location using a cheap client box without tuners, I believe the tuners can be shared from the Tiviar over the LAN (Cat5e cable).
I don't have a Tiviar, but others should be able to direct you if you wish to do this.

I do have a 4 tuner Digibit R1 box centralised, and those tuners can be shared on the LAN, so coax only to the central location.

Check the HTPC section for threads on such set ups if interested.

You can use a KODI plugin to control an Enigma 2 box.

I have a Raspberry pi with KODI (osmc), I installed the plugin on kodi and using the TVs own remote (through CEC over the HDMI cable) I can stream channels and recordings etc

I am using homeplugs to send the signal to the other room.

This has the restriction of number of tuners available mentioned above, and for the record I will be setting up my old Amiko Alien 2 in the second room when I get a chance to run cables from he dish.

There is also a very good Andriod TV app that allows you to stream from any enigma 2 box, even adds bouquet as rows of picons to the Android TV homescreen channel. Has the option to also add a bouquet to Android Live channels.
