Painting Kitchen Presses

Hi, I’m thinking about painting my kitchen presses with Dulux satinwood. They’re just the fake wood that were put in when the house was built. Has anyone done this, and do you have any tips? Or is it a bad idea? Suggestions for colours would be welcome too. Thanks!

I did this to mine last year. First step was a wash with sugar soap, then a light sand. Then primer, undercoat and finally paint. Have a think about the handles first, if you're going to change handles then the holes of the new ones might be different, meaning old ones will have to be filled in and it's easier to do that before painting. I used colourtrend paint for all coats, far superior to dulux, but not as widely available.

Went with a light green colour, and just did the doors.

Primer/undercoat such as Bloxx It or PureGrip, then top coats. Use a mohair roller, it will give the nearest thing to a spray finish.

Preparation is the key wash everything really well first then prime,I used universal primer didn't want to use bin primer or the like, undercoat and what I used was exterior sandtex eggshell real good finish
Don't think water based (colour trend) is the way to go oil based (sandtex or dulux satinwood) is the way to go

I just finished doing this job for a friend. They were MDF doors covered with melamine.

First I wrote in pencil on the back of each door where it was from, then removed all the doors and drawers and placed the handles in each individual cupboard space. It's easier overall to remove the hinges from the doors rather than the cupboard frame.

The covering itself peeled off a lot easier than I expected which was very handy, small pieces were shaved off with a stanley blade and any traces of the spray on glue used to secure it were removed with a light sand paper.

I then primed all the piece's to be painted with a PVA bond diluted with 50% water, you'll need a lot of space to place the individual doors and drawers while they are drying.

Once the primer is dry apply the first coat of paint, I used Little Greene matt emulsion. Before the second coat of paint go outside and sand the area with a fine sandpaper then clean with a damp cloth, before the third coat sand lightly with a very fine sandpaper.

Once the painting was finished I then gave them two coats of Sadolin Polyurethane clear varnish.

Replace doors and drawers and then refit handles, job done. Takes a good few hours overall but my friends house was not being lived in so it was very easy. Not a job where you want kids or pets in the area you are working. Materials cost under 50 euro and it's like a new kitchen.
