WWYD: Job offer

I have been in the civil service for over 10 years. It has been good to me regarding flexibility with a young family, and I was very lucky to join there v shortly before the recession hit.
However, I have always had, and continue to have, issues with the hierarchical structure (esp as regards the "lower orders" having autonomy), the conservative outlook, the rigidity regarding rules and regulations, the slow career progression and the fact that the cut and thrust of business isn't there (for e.g. no sales and marketing).

I recently completed a business masters, which I found really interesting.

I did an interview recently and I was offered the role last week. The pay is 10k above what I am currently earning in the CS. It is a role that really interests me, and would be excellent strategically for me to get back into the private sector, and hopefully progress.

However, it is a 2 year contract so the plan was to take a career break, to have a safety net. BUT, the CS have indicated they are unlikely to grant me one.
I would have to quit and would lose my pension (there is a pension in new role but naturally not as good)

I feel selfish for wanting a private sector role with likely more demands as I still do have a young family. (also a lot of family stuff going on, but am trying not to let that influence me unduly)

An interesting predicament, I’m in the public service so I can understand the frustration.

You could always make a list of pros and cons , giving weighting to each item and choose from there. You may just be in the doldrums where you are, maybe you change job within the CS.

If you want more variety , maybe you could do some evening/ weekend work for yourself first before leaving the CS. I don’t know what you should do , but one day you’ll wake up after dwelling on it and I hope you are happy with the choice.

I actually like the "job" I have in my department at the moment . But I have the yen for something new.
I did actually volunteer with a charity on their marketing team and it only served to whet my appetite more! But it was tough going doing additional hours in the evenings with my familial responsibilities.
