Hi there, I hope this is ok to post / ask. I recently was in court finalising my divorce. I haven’t received the divorce order in writing yet, and have no tea idea how long this may take (I imagine a number of months, perhaps). This may be a very obvious question, but I can’t actually find out for sure online - I’ve tried to contact the local civil registrar but have no response yet. To re-marry, do I need this paperwork? Would something from my solicitor suffice? I of course don’t wish to rush, but the divorce process took so long, and now to have to wait possibly months more seems a lot! I would appreciate any advice.

Your best bet is to ask your Solicitor I think.

I got a copy of my Divorce Order a month after the court sitting. You need this to prove that you are divorced so that you can register another marriage with the Civil Registrar.........although why you'd want to make the same mistake twice (i.e. getting married again!) is beyond me.:P

Best of luck and hope this one works out.:)

Can I check if this came out to you in the post? My divorce was finalised about 6 weeks ago and I want to change my name back!

Absolutely right - I should have just done this. I felt like my poor solicitor had had enough of me!

Haha, very true. I didn’t think I ever would either, but there we are!

For what it is worth, I was able to change my name long before the divorce. Main issue was passport office, but I just had to prove I had been using my maiden name again. I did that about two years ago.

your birth name is always your name, no matter that you have been using your married name, you don't need to do anything or have any paperwork in order to start using your own name again
