Petrol or diesel

Thinking of changing soon, currently driving an 07 Avensis, drive about 80 km round trip to work and about 50km at the weekend. Spend about 55 to 60 quid a week on petrol at the min, with the future of diesel looking uncertain am I as well to stay with petrol or change. Would like to switch to one of the lesser suvs if budget allows.

Depending on budget I would look at electric, also options of hybrid or even PHEV if budget is larger

I would not move to diesel

Any which crossover would he buy so.
Phev = Outlander - v scarce but possible
    Hybrid = new RAV? - v expensive
    Electric = Kona? - any?

At mileage (20k km) you're still in petrol territory.

What money you looking to spend OP?

The mileage might be on the lower end, but the commute makes it diesel territory.

Would probably spend 15k. If I’m spending 60 quid now on petrol how much could I knock off that if I moved to diesel, talking purely on fuel cost.

Budget for knocking €15 off that at least. The 1.6 Avensis wouldnt be known for its fuel economy.

About a third pushing towards a half at a guess.
60 quid petrol would be somewhere 30-40 quid diesel depending on what you picked.

Is the Hyundai Tucson a guzzler

    Depending on the diesel car.

Avensis doing what low 30s per gallon?

A kuga diesel will do 40mpg average.
    So 25% better ish?

    Qashqai do high 40s
    So 40% better ish?

    (Cant do litre per 100km)

Diesel be a bit dearer to service and generally dealer day 1.

    Dunno about the Hyundai.

Its a bit pointless comparing a new diesel engine to a 11 year old petrol engine.....

Is it SUV you want or Crossover?

A Tucson is a Crossover, not a SUV

Any specific reason why you want to go that vehicle over a car?

You don't say what size SUV you need, but the lessest SUV :D (Suzuki Ignis) does 50 mpg in the real world and can be had for 15k-ish new.

In other words..there are quite a few small petrols out there that can give good mpg...but small is the operative word here. A heavy SUV will always be a bit of a guzzler.

Ok, so a crossover it is then not an SUV no2 that I know the difference, just fancy a change that’s all but wouldn’t entirely rule out a car. BTW I’ve never actually drove a crossover, I mightn’t even like them, bro in law has one, can always find out.

They are nice to drive, the height is nice in them but they are not the best on diesel or petrol.

But boot size is small, very small. Most cars will have bigger boot. I had Qashqai and it was before kids, once the kids arrived the Qashqai had to go.

You need to consider not just service cost, tires are more expensive.

Depending on budget you could look at newer petrol v diesel, it wont be a big of a gap as some of the posts above.

Lexus have a number of older hybrid SUV which are nice. What type of cars do you like the interior of? Crossover options are huge and plenty knocking around.

Hard to recommend without idea of budget.

Small boot eh? I’m not putting the golf clubs and electric cart on the back seat. Some very interesting replies, maybe I would better off with a car. We’ll see.

How about a honda 1.6 diesel crv or if space not important hrv? Hard to beat the Honda 1.6 diesel engine for economy if you don't want much more than 120bhp.. also service at 20k km

Ah they're not that small either.
We've a kuga. Auld lad had a qashqai. Also has kiga now. Uncle has a crv. Cousin has a RAV.

The boots are reasonable. Don't expect passat estate but bigger than a hatchback. Boot space can be more useful than a saloon's.

People talk down crossovers a lot. Theres a fashion to talk them down as pointless. Lot of people prefer the high seating. My wife won't drive anything else with the kids in car seats. My cousin the same and a mate just got an ateca for same reasons.

We've a second crossover coming. I'd prefer a normal car but....

Not sure of budget but there's a hybrid crv coming in February to . Mid spec around 43k.. 2 litre petrol hybrid putting out 180ish bhp.. should average 55mpg

Pretty sure the OP said 15k

That's also a LOT of money for a crv.

Who is talking it down? The boot is small....the Qashqai I had wasn’t much bigger to a Golf boot

As I said in post, grand without kids, one you put a buggy into the boot then boot was full....

The high seated drive is nice and especially if putting kids in and out of car seats....good and bad points to them.....

Bring with you and test, that’s what I do now with the buggy....I doubt any of the current crossovers will fit the clubs and cart easily....

I'm in the market for a new car as we have a baby on the way so need something bigger. It seems that if we rule out diesel we're ruling out about 75% of the cars from the years we're looking at.

So the question is, if we're not doing much distance driving, is a diesel car something that should be completely avoided? During lockdown, a tank of petrol is currently lasting us about 6 weeks. But even during normal times, from Monday to Friday we tend to drive 2k each way to the train station. Then, a tank was probably lasting us about 3 weeks. There will be occasional trips down to waterford and I'm sure we'll end up on the m50 yin time to time, but there will also be periods of 3 weeks say there the furthest we go is a 5k trip.

This seems to be an old thread. Diesel is going one direction and it is not down. What is the budget you have in mind? based on the requirement you have I think you already know diesel is not the way forward

We'd like to spend €15k, but from looking online, I'm thinking that it might be worth going a couple thousand extra and hanging onto it for another year. The volvo v60 looks like a nice and suitable car. But there are 4 of those on carzone at the moment under 20k and all diesel.

Obviously we want high spec, low mileage, petrol, low price, etc. I'm just wondering is petrol something we could sacrafice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,522 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

I would say the diesel aspect is non negotiable. Your driving is completely unsuited to it.

how about a prius? or an Auris hybrid? Should be some out there in price range?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,522 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

They’re like the opposite of premium though :)

Auris hybrid sports touring whatever they call it would be very well suited to the OPs needs I’d say. They are quite dull though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,622 ✭✭✭blue note

Dull sadly probably fits my requirements :(

Is a prius not a bit small? I'm thinking once you put in a buggy and child seat, there won't be a huge amount of space left. I also have it in my head that if we go fairly big, should we have a second we won't need to change it.

Probably worth checking out some reviews. I think the Auris boot is a bit compromised with the battery but havent seen one in person. i had honda civic diesel estate a few years ago that was great. Very frugal on diesel and lots of boot space... not sure there would be any petrol versions around.. importing might be an option.. importing might be your best chance of getting something 'premium' in a petrol really

If you wanted you will pick up a Outlander PHEV in UK in your budget, you will get high mileage version in Ireland as well. This is dealers going over, buying at auction and then putting huge margin on them. They have massive space inside, proper SUV. Has a 11kWh battery so you can do all short trips on battery. You will need to put in home charger if possible?

A GX4h will give you decent spec with leather, heated seats, sat nav, sun roof etc. If you cannot install a home charge point then just go for standard hybrid

I see one place has a Camry hybrid, they are a monstor of a car but probably a Jap import

Good call on the camry.. This one looks quality and look at the tax

You’d be surprised how small a V60 is.

They will be imports, Jap imports which is not a problem but you need to check with insurance

They are beautiful car and Toyota released here last year or year before I think so no issue getting serviced. Beautiful car
