    Hi all,

Just wondering if you could advise me on what to purchase/where for a 14 year old gaming mad Son. He has a laptop but he said it lags and games are too slow. Games he plays are Ghost recon wild lands, Rainbow six siege, Overwatch, Rust and Metal gear solid. I really have no idea where to start and would appreciate any guidance. Thanks in advance.

    1. What is your budget? [€750]

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Gaming. He has what I thought was a gaming laptop but he said its too slow.

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? No

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? No

    5. Do you need a monitor? No he can get that later. Has an old one now.

5a. If yes, what size do you need.

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? He has an old monitor, no idea of resolution. Will look at getting him a monitor in Sales.

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? No idea.

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? No idea what this is.

    8. How can you pay? Debit Card

    9. When are you purchasing? ASAP, it's for Christmas.

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based? Would definitely need help. We are in Drogheda, Louth.

Thanks for any help. Payday today so I can order this evening if you have any suggestions. I really have no idea what to look for.

Does he have a keyboard and mouse that he can upgrade later?

Do you have a Windows key that you can use? Your answer implies that you do, Windows licenses are around €100 so if you have one already you'll save some money.

    Hi Troyzer,

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes I have a Windows key thanks. He has a keyboard and a mouse, he can save and get better ones in times.

    Thanks again.

If that's the case then your objective (within your budget) would be to buy as barebones a PC as possible but which already has a good CPU and GPU.

You can upgrade a monitor, inputs, RAM, hard drives etc later. What you want is a good foundation with a CPU and GPU that does the job now.

Those kinds of PCs don't really exist ready made because they're usually targeted as complete systems.

Your best off going down the custom route be that building it yourself or getting someone else to build it for you.

I'm assuming you're going to use Windows 10?

I just thrashed this one together on PC Specialist. It's very, very barebones but has a good CPU and GPU with the ability to upgrade pretty much everything else.

If you can stretch a little bit further, it might be worth adding an extra 8GB of RAM.

These lads are pretty good, I've ordered off them twice and the build/delivery time is really good.

Have a look at the attached PDF.

Thank you very much. I'll have a look at that. I really have no clue when it comes to this.

When I was 15, I wanted to build my own custom PC, so my parents got the parts I needed for Christmas and I learned online how to build it and what components worked with what. To be honest, I knew exactly what I was doing weeks before Christmas as I'd spend hours reading on forums and YouTube videos on gaming PC builds.

No better feeling Christmas afternoon of booting a system I had just put together myself and it working smoothly. I got a good few years use out of it, saving and upgrading as time went by. Only 3 years ago or so I replaced it entirely.

Jaysus you young lads have it easy. No YouTube back in my days :pac:

That's actually a pretty good budget if you want to give building it yourself a go. It's really not that hard and easily upgradeable in the future. These components will get the most out of your budget.

PcSpecialist are great though if you want something pre-made. Bought a custom laptop off them a few years ago and it was a very well put together.

Better off building it yourself. You can learn everything off YouTube, just takes some research.

"He has a laptop but he said it lags and games are too slow."

    Maybe your internet is ****.

Looking at some top end gaming PCs on the likes of Komplett etc. "guaranteed lag free online gaming experience". Jesus Christ. Should be ashamed of themselves.

this comes to about 700 euro i could buy all the parts and put it together and then you could buy it off me would be a better deal then buying a prebuilt off some site and you wouldnt have to have the hassle of building it yourself

I remember telling friends at school that I was getting a gaming computer for Christmas and them being shocked you could play "proper" games on a computer. :pac:

No one I really knew growing up knew much about computers other then basic stuff. Im glad I had these sources to learn from :) Gaming is still my favourite pass time even though time is limited these days.

To OP, let us know what your son decides he wants or what you decide to get him. Can be easily ripped off with prebuilds so watch out.
