Manager asking for personal phone number

    Hi all,

I've worked in a company the last number of years, and as part of the job-role we provide an on-call service in tandem with another office based in the US. In the past, the team in Ireland covered 12 hours and the US team covered the other 12 hours.

Last year it was announced that the on-call work was being outsourced to a location in Asia.At the beginning of the year we finished on-call for good.

Roll this month were it has been decided that we're to return to providing an on-call service, as the outsourcing hasn't worked out. However, rather than go back to the previous agreement, my boss has asked us to carry our phones with us at all times, and if an issue is called in, to be contactable. I have always carried a personal phone and a work phone, unlike a lot of my colleagues who ditched their personal phones for a "free" phone which is paid for. Once I finish work I tend to switch the work phone off and stick it in my bag until the next morning when I am back in work.

I approached my boss about this, and I was told I would need to provide them with my personal number. This makes me feel uneasy and it's not something I am willing to do. I am also uneasy about this whole situation. Any advice?
