Would you .... buy Lidl oil?

Was in Lidl today and see they have 5 L of "W5" (the brand they use for washing up liquid and the like, which is how I saw it) for €15, 10W 30 IIRC.

It had the VW 501 01 mark as stated in my manual for my '02 A4.

So would you take a chance with it on a car worth a few hundred quid?

Why not - change oil early and often is the key

LIDL just a reseller - apparently its Pennasol but theres no MSDS I can see

Ive been using Halfords Oil in 2 cars - its made by Comma (Esso) I change my oil often

MR2 does 3 - 4k miles per year so gets an annual change

Civic uses the 5w30 it says change every 20k kms but I generally do it around the 10 - 12k kms as its cheap enough to do it - last 5 changes were halfords oil aa=nd no issues.

No problem once it meets the specs. I’ve been using a variety of Halfords and Total oils in the Civic since I bought it, it’s going a storm with 250k. Change every 10kkm and use 5w30 fully synth.

Thanks both! Will pick up one this weekend, maybe treat her to a filter too :)

I'd suggest to say "no", as things wont happen in short-term. Lidl is great for foods (fish, meat etc) but unsure for engine oil.

I usually purchase 5W30 Castrol sale at Tesco every year (summer) and this year got 10L for 2 cars with 12.5 EUR per 2L. The same stuff at Halford is seen 38EUR/4L.

In fairness, Lidl are just resellers. Its not like they have a refinary plant. OP, if it meets spec, burst on. I use their oil in my corolla

Got some - car is burning oil anyway so may be on its last legs so happy to take a punt due to positive feedback here.

Managed to drop the cap into engine bay !!

Anyway, in case anyone else is interested here's the label. They have another spec for same price.

Trick is to buy it at the start of the year when its on sale - think I paid €10 per 4 litres a few years ago - got enough oil there to do the MR2 until well into the next decade

They used to also have a fully synthetic oil in 1 litre containers but I haven't seen it for a while.

I was happy to use it in daily driver, but I only put Mobil 1 in my MR2.

Currently have Lidl oil in my car. It still goes! As has been said the key to keeping a car going is regular oil changes with correct oil spec.
