In job 7 months - too soon to interview to new job?

    Hi all,

    A quick bit of history - I moved from marketing, to teaching for 3 years, and back to marketing again as it was just too stressful to continue teaching (I live in the UK where it is notorious!). I made the move back to marketing in August 2017. I stayed in that role for 8 months until April this year, when I moved to a new marketing role (from Marketing Coordinator to Marketing Manager) and I also managed a 9k salary increase, as my previous role had been very poorly paid.

    My question - I do like my current job, I have no major complaints, however I recently spotted a role that my current experience is perfect for - they are looking for someone who has worked in marketing within the education sector. The job would be 14k more than I am currently on, and offers benefits such as health insurance, dental, etc (which my current place offers none of) as well as being just 2 miles down the road. I applied, and within 24 hours, was called for interview.

    However - despite getting the interview (which is Tuesday this coming week), on reflection, I am reluctant to go. I just think I have only been in my current role 7 months, and my previous role just 8 months. Surely I look like a job hopper? As well as that, my current role gives me room to improve my experience without my boss breathing down my back - as I say, there is nothing at all majorly wrong with my current role, if I am honest, I am purely motivated by the fact it would be a 14k pay rise (doing teaching meant I had to go backwards in what I could earn when I moved back to marketing). 14k more means a lot when you live in London. My partner and i want to start saving for a house, he is on a good salary and mine is decent enough at moment but not near enough to buy a house anytime soon.

    My gut is telling me not to do it - I guess integrity, the fact that I like my boss etc, and I think I really should get at least a year in my CV. But it's also a good opportunity.

    Any thoughts?

    Go for the interview. It is not for you to decide whether you look like a "job hopper" but be prepared to answer that question.
    I can understand your loyalty to your boss and the fact that you have had a few changes in employment recently may make you yearn for some stability, but the chance for this position may not come again anytime soon.

    What have you got to lose?

    Your concerns are valid, having been in the last two positions for barely more than half a year would certainly be something that I would be very acutely aware of when interviewing, and I would definitely be asking questions around this.

    That said, if you can make convincing arguments then it should not be a show stopper. Be as prepared as possible to sell the fact that you see this new position as somewhere that you can grow mid to long term, and be able to show how it will bring you in a direction which you are far happier with compared to your previous positions.
