Hi, I've an in tank fuel pump in my 04 Audi A4 TDI. Just changed my fuel filter and took ages. Had to use hand primer pump for fuel to come up but noticed i never heard the in tank pump kick in since I got the car. Does anyone no has it any other purpose than filling fuel filter after filter change. Car seems to be going ok without it. Thanks in advance

As far as I know the lift pump only kicks in when the engine is started. I changed the fuel filter in mine a month back and used VCDS to prime it as like most cars the pump runs when you turn on the ignition, however the VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda cars dont.

Is there a need to replace the pump when it doesn't work. Tried powering it manually and nothing happening. Seems to run and drive fine

I know there is another pump after the fuel filter so if the lift pump isnt working it would be putting extra strain on the other pump. If your 100% sure it isnt working I'd get it replaced. If the other pump fails the car will stall.

Before replacing the pump though, check the relay for it, and the fuse etc..

Thanks for reply. I'm getting power back. I put power straight to pump it takes to much power like a short and doesn't do anything so I will change pump anyway. Thanks all for replys

I have a 2003 A6 1.9 Tdi and when I switch on the ign I can hear the pump run for a few seconds.
The intank pump failed a year ago - and the car would not even attempt to start
So I would say if yours is starting and running OK then the pump must be working .
There is a pump relay - have you checked that out ?

Pump gets power but not pumping. Took it out to bench test and pump is seized or internal short.

Was the pump seized ? Just curious for future reference.

Yes but will open pump someday to actually see what goes wrong in them. I'll have to cut open.

Just had closer look at my pump. It had small crack so I'm thinking fuel got in and done damage
