So it seems the French have decided to protest by blocking all the highways at the access roundabouts after the government raised the tax on diesel, apparently it's quite serious, the government have the army on stand by for fear of the police joining the protest.
I'm sure the same would happen here if they raised the tax on fuel??

    Why would it?

    Taxes are necessary.

2040 - 'grow' the population by one million people to increase the national tax base = more financial livestock

One dead. 200 injured. I'm sure the organisers are proud though.

Well, they have a point. People were incentivised by Govt to buy diesel cars over petrol due to supposedly lower emissions. Now they're getting rode, and not in a good way.

I drive a 2.0l petrol bit ches. I’m not a loser in a Kia nor a farmer. Yes I pay more for fuel and road tax but at least I have a car that would leave your glorified tractors to dust.

Also one diesel car is gayer than the boards.ie moderators convention and we all know the mods are super gay.

Sorry mods but you know it’s true.

The French are very good at protests. Apart from the water charges, we haven’t really done a proper protest in decades. Even when the whole IMF/Anglo mess was news, people just gave out but ultimately just got on with it.

Imagine dying over your right to a diesel car.

What a sad way to go.

The death of even one person makes this awful, not to mind the injuries.

But every year we are at the mercy of their Air Traffic Controllers too. They must be millionaires by now.

Sad for the death and mayhem.

I am sure Emmanuel Macron will sort it out. There is something about him I just do not like. Not really sure why though.

The French love a good strike/protest over absolutely anything, we could learn a lot from them.

"The French" held a big demonstration against the introduction of same sex marriage. More usually it is some sectional interest like French lorry drivers or French farmers, but they all seem to get labelled "The French"

I can't remember any water charges protests in France. They could learn a bit from The Irish.

We've already created a new diesel tax in the form of a 1% levy on all new or imported Diesel cars from 1/1/2019

Remember a few years ago, they tore the **** out of the place over the retirement age being increased from 60 to 63. We did nothing when ours was raised to 68! Meanwhile we protested over the water charges that cost us pennies in comparison!

That's a good thing. You will be on full wages until age 68 instead of trying to live on a pension.

I remember reading about the French Revolution. Just common people getting fed up by oligarchs, landlords and high taxes. They dragged them out the streets into the guillotines.

People today are too docile unfortunately

Let's wind them up, along with cutting off your water inlet and sewage outlet so.

The protest is a backlash from all this carbon tax stuff that has been getting loaded on us by the EU and the UN.

I think it's time to actually time to address the "climate change" theory and if we actually care about it. When we really drill down to it, do we really care about so called climate change or is it just a media thing? I don't think the general public care about it enough to drastically reduce their living standards. Reducing our carbon emissions is just one of those things that we'd like but can live peacefully without it. Like a 4k television or a sky sports subscription

Here's a novel idea, how about we fund the local authorities and allow them to maintain the essential services like they did for a long long time, our water system was deliberately let go to $hit so that our politicians could lie that privatisation was the only way to fix it

As opposed to the cushy jobs in IW for failure County managers at the time, or contracts for a company associated with you know who.. Company which also got a massive debt write-off.

Let's not pretend IW was any sort of reform of the system. It's an expensive and unnecessary administrative layer. A billing agency which doesn't even do that thanks to the entirely justified protests. It has no reason for being at this point.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,809 ✭✭✭✭whisky_galore

The only sets of protesters here that the govt is actually scared of are farmers and the 'wrinklies' as Ivan Yeats calls them.

IW protestors as well I guess, but since the whole IW premise was built on sand and you could just ignore your bill without consequence...well then..
