Girlfriend has put €20 of petrol in her car it's a 1.9 diesel octavia she phoned her dad he told her to fill the rest with diesel so she put in €40 worth of diesel she drove home ok but car won't start now.should I try drain the tank and put new diesel in or is it more likely she has damaged the engine ?

Drain it. It’ll probably be ok but you won’t know til after.

Neighbour said to use easy start to get the car running then just take it on a long journey, does that sound safe I don't want to force the engine to start and do damage.

I wouldn’t drive it anyway if it’s 33% petrol in there. Drain the fuel filter and tank and refill with diesel. You risk doing injector or fuel pump damage IMO.

What years the car? The older ones could cope better if mixed

Best be safe than sorry. Get it drained and refill. If already driven, damage could already be done.

Do not drive that car another inch. Get it drained, lines flushed and fuel filter changed. It is just not worth the risk of damage to the injectors. If that has not happened already!

Monster in law did it to her 03 Octavia 1.9 TDI.
Stuck €20 petrol in,drove a few Kms to our house and said oh I put petrol in instead of diesel.
I said don't drive it and drain it but she said ah it,ll be ok I'll drive up and put the rest diesel in.
Car is still 100% ,months later.
    I love those enginesðŸ˜

That's why I asked the age
The old 1.9 pds could take petrol in the tank
Them engines were fairly robust,I top mine up with 5 litres of petrol every 4/5 tanks
    Cleans it out

Can modern cars be siphoned? Diesel in the mouth tastes horrible though.

I had to drain a full tank of petrol out of a diesel Octavia before. I took the fuel line off between the filter and pump and kept turning the ignition on to pump the juice into a container. The pump stops after a few seconds so I had to keep knocking it off and back on.
There is an electric lift pump in the tank which is what pumps the fuel out, not the pump on the engine.
It took a while but it worked.

If he wanted to get a professional, he would already have phoned one. He wants to know if there's anything he can do himself, which is why he posted here.

Any damage that could be done, has been done by now.

Cars worth nothing now been an 03 anyway
Most likely damage has been done if any
Change fuel filter and try get it started
If it does fill to brim with diesel and bottle of dipetane and bring it for a good drive on motorway
If it's nackered pick another banger up with jewellery in the window for 500 quid

    Car is 2010

I did much worse to my dad's 2006 1.9 octavia a good few years ago. Should be the same engine as yours, I believe the later models had the 1.6 instead of the 1.9. I got to the filling station with the computer saying I had 0kms left in the tank, then filled to with petrol! The car cut out around a mile down the road. My uncle who is a mechanic came out, he drained the tank. I can't remember exactly what else he did, but the fuel lines were not washed out, and the fuel filter wasn't changed. Car was running again within an hour of him arriving. We kept the car for another 4-5 years, and did well over 150,000 kms after that.
