Do you list your references on your CV?

Or do you have "references available at request"?

For a while now I've had "Referees available at request" on my CV. But because there were no references on the CV, what happened in my most recent interview was that the interviewer was asking me questions like "and who was your supervisor on that job?" and then taking the name as he was going through the CV.

When I made the decision to have my CV this way, I intended to always mention about contacting me if you wish for any references.

What happened recently, was that one of the guys who interviewed me got in contact with my present company and he didn't end up being put in touch
with the referee I had from that company. He ended up being put in touch with someone who wouldn't likely have much good to say about me.

Is it better to list the references on the CV.

I just put down Full Time Mad Bastard. As soon as they see that I always get the job.

On request. When I was very green in my early years of job-hunting, I’d put down names and contact details of referees and in that scenario, former workplaces could potentially be pestered with calls. And that might make them have less-than-enthusiastic feelings towards me and I could then get a so-so reference when I’m close to getting a job offer. So now I only want former bosses contacted if I’m seriously in the running so ‘References on request’ will do.

I don't put down either. It seems redundant.

Sometimes if I needed that precious CV real estate, I’ve left out a references section too. If they want references, they’ll ask.
