    Hi all.
I have a 2006 avensis that i was going to trade in for new in the new year.
Long story short, after getting a oil light warning yesterday. my mechanic has serviced it and took off the sump and cleaned the mesh?the light is stiill there it seems that there is an oil pressure issue and the engine is damaged and will seize if i drive it.
there is a knocking in the engine.

Now i don't doubt my mechanic when he says it is not viable to repair.
It has cost me 200 euro already yesterday.
I do not want to put more money into it

FINANCIALLY which of the following would ye reccommend or any ideas

what would my chances be of approaching a dealer and doing a deal for a 191 and looking to use an old car from his stock to keep me going until the new car arrives in january.?

If i can drive my car to the dealer, would it qualify for a scrappage deal.?

Would i get a better deal if i went to the dealer tomorrow and dealt for a 182 tomorrow.

would there be a big difference in the value of the car in 3 years time, 191 as against 182.

would i be better spending a grand on a banger with nct and looking to trade in april

I can manage without a car for the next week by getting lifts but i have to have a car by then.

    Thanks for any advice

To consider a 182, your only option would be heavily discounted pre reg or something like that cause in will be regarded as a year older if you go to trade in in 3 years so you need to buy it cheaper this end.
Look into scrappage deals and the terms and conditions attached. If your car suits this, use it.
Personally Id beg borrow or steal a car to get me to 2019 before buying.

Alot of dealers/manufacturers are offering scrappage deals where they will give you a minimum trade in allowance against a new model. I think the criteria for that is usually that the car you are trading must have a valid NCT and you have owned it for at least 12 months. Some offers also insist the car is no more than 10 years old to qualify. These scrappage deals are basically another term for discount given by the manufacturer to sell new cars so the dealer still gets his margin either way and the bonus of whatever he can sell your old car on for. In your case a nearly 13 year old Avensis with a knocking engine is not going make money for the dealer and will probably be scrapped.

Best thing to do I think is visit a few dealers of different brands and see where you stand on the scrappage deal. If your taking a 191 new car that he has in stock then you will probably be able to drive your current car until January when the new car is registered assuming your Avensis doesn't die between now and then. Alternatively look at giving the dealer your Avensis now and see if they have banger you can have until January. Alternatively buy a banger yourself that you can sell on easily enough come January that you won't lose too much money on. I wouldn't be waiting until April as usually these scrappage schemes are only on offer for a month or two after the registration changes in January and July to bump up sales at those times. On/off car rental to see you to the end of the year might be worth looking at too though the lead up to Christmas can be a busy and expensive time to rent a car.

Do some of the scrapper schemes require you to own the trade in car for a minimum period of time before trade in? If they do keep the Toyota in your name until 2019 even if you choose to run a cheap run about till then in case ther is a good scrapper scheme.

Thanks all for the replies.going to run around the dealers on Saturday to see what's what.

One more question.we normally drive Toyotas but doing 20 -25000 km per year, mainly country driving rules out the Rav 4, Corolla hybrids and we should look elsewhere for a diesel

After all that,we went and put a deposit down on a new Kia Sportage.
    Straight deal,0% finance.
We went to Toyota but you'll have to buy from a picture if you want a Rav,camry or Corolla.
    Thanks all

    Interesting how you put that.
Tough on the dealer all he can say is "do a deal to give me 30k and here is a nice picture of what I'll give you".
Requires quite a leap of faith from the buyer.
Not your problem of course, good luck with the Kia.

Yep.i felt sorry for the the Toyota salesman.there was a Chr and Yaris in the showroom.that was it.
Said we might go for the new Rav hybrid.
No Rav till Feb and then quoted 62 mpg for the Rav hybrid!!!
    2.5 petrol engine +the electric .
Must be some electric part to it!!!!

Why does it have to be a new car? That’s some change from a clapped out Avensis. You are over reacting due to the unreliable current car and you are thinking the easy end to this pain is a new car, but it’s huge loss in value. Dealers will bite your hand off 181 and before, up to 6 years warranties on these transferred, so stand back and think about this
