Christmas holidays

    Not a huge fan of Christmas because I have a toxic family. Looking at getting away for Christmas on the cheap. But the cheapest place I can go to is in Europe. But they also celebrate Christmas so I'm not exactly escaping Christmas. Would new scenery help my hatred for Christmas?

    How about staying in Ireland and doing something else for the day? Like volunteering, for example. It's not clear what exactly you are running away from. If it's your family, just don't spend time with them. There's surely no need to go abroad just to avoid them? My guess is that unless you go to a Muslim country, you're not going to be able to avoid Christmas the event. Maybe you need to figure out how to live with it happening every year and relegate it to a silly thing that lasts two months.

    Unless you're careful about where you go, you could find yourself having a really **** day holed up in a soulless hotel room or in a place where everything has closed down for the day and there's nothing to see or do. I can think of nicer ways to waste my money.

    I know a a guy who hates christmas too. He travels to middle eastern countries this time every year so that he wont have to be around the whole thing. It doesnt work though, running away that is, because he still comes home unhappy. He comes from an abusive broken family too and so it seems like a good idea to just get out of dodge until its all over. But like i said, it doesnt work out that way.
    You can go to the most anti christmas country in the world but it wont make any difference because really what youre trying to escape from is internal and has nothing to do with whats going on outside. I went through a period of hating christmas. I tried to avoid it all and acted like the grinch but the truth was I came from a broken family and christmas was a time where i was reminded of everything i didnt have. It was painful and sad but instead of feeling that pain i blocked it out with hostility towards a holiday season. The only way out of that trap was to admit the truth and feel the pain and loss but still be open to christmas. Trust me when you face the pain magic happens. You feel connected again and not on the outside even though nothing externally has changed.
    Dont run away Op, face it head on. Put yourself right in the middle of it all. It will be painful and you'll be tempted to respond with cyncism and anger but dont allow that to happen because its an act of defense. Let the pain and whatever happen and if you do you'll find something amazing will take place.
