Nice Resorts in Eastern Spain

Hi, going to a wedding in Sitges next July and would like to make a holiday out of it while we are there. We normally avoid going on holidays in peak time, we have no kids, so we usually like a quieter and cheaper sun holiday to relax.

I haven't been to any resorts in this area of Spain before, does anyone have any recommendations for Tarragona, Cambrils, Valencia etc or where to avoid? Any other resorts to recommend, what is Salou like? We like nice restaurants, nice beaches, not too interested in nightlife.

    Thanks!

I’m no expert on this part of Spain but many years back stayed in Salou area and used the train that runs up and down Coast to see a couple of places. Tarragona itself is a lovely historic city that isn’t so touristy and does have a beach area. Cambrils has a Harbour and a lot of restaurants, definitely upmarket and popular with locals.Salou itself is ok but has a bit of a “purpose built” look about a lot of it, apart from the nice old seafront villas section. I’ve heard Sitges is very nice itself. It’s easy to get to Barcelona or Taragona for a day from any of these places, and it’s nice to make use of the rail and explore one or places that do not feature on the brochures. The local commuting line goes south to historic Tortosa, a small town close to the Ebro Delta. There’s a good waterpark near Salou if you like that kind of thing, and of course the big theme park Port Aventura, which I didn’t explore. It’s easy to find local style eating in the area with very good fish dishes, and the decent sparkling wine. There’s vineyards to explore, and excursions can be made inland to likes of Montserrat, which is a remarkable place. Regarding beaches and sea bathing, I found the coast to have quite a longshore current and bit of an undertow in places that could make for less pleasant sea bathing than elsewhere. I would not particularly recommend it for poor swimmers, or indeed families with young children-in this way it’s a bit like the more exposed beaches of eg Gran Canaria around Playa del Ingles.
