Earlier this year I was on a panel for a promotion. I got very sick for a number of weeks and rather than using sick leave (as I didnt want it to affect my promotion)I used up a lot of annual leave

As it stands I have no annual leave left and there is no flexi leave available at my grade. I was hoping to take a few days leave at xmas and maybe in February. I see that under the Shorter Working Year Scheme you can apply to take 2 weeks unpaid leave. However you have to put in a specific 2 week period. I dont want to take 2 weeks off all at once. I would rather (if possible) take a couple of days here and there that would add up to the 10 days. Has anybody ever appplied for this and was successful.

    Thanks in Advance

Why not apply for unpaid leave for however many days you need? You can even cite urgent domestic reasons for it.

You could also try your hand applying for Force Majeure. Force Majeure has to be leave that is unplanned, unforeseen and for a situation that only you can deal with. For instance, if a family member was to fall sick and require someone to assist them and you’re the only family member available as you’ve no siblings or they are currently abroad then you might be able to apply for a maximum of 5 days emergency leave.

Do you have kids? If so, you might be able to cover the Feb absence with parental leave.

Thanks for the response Bobbysands81 and sorry for the slow reply. I just assumed the SWYS and unpaid leave was the same.

So I could approach HR and say I need to take 3 or 4 days leave over the next few months as unpaid leave? I was also thinking of seeing if I could use some of my leave for next year in advance. Just not sure what options to take.

Shorter Working year and unpaid leave are different.

Take a look at point (vii) here for unpaid leave for urgent domestic reasons - https://hr.per.gov.ie/special-leave/

Generally speaking you can’t take leave from next year’s allocation. However, sometimes if you have a decent boss, they might agree some form of local arrangement.
