Engine light on and car spluttering - Hyundai i30 (2008)

Hello all,

I’ve had my 2008 Hyundai i30 for a few years now and it has never given me an ounce of trouble.

However, early into my morning commute today I was greeted with a spluttering engine and subsequent turning on of the yellow engine light.

I managed to get it parked up a short distance down the road and my local mechanic is coming to pick it up and assess it later.

I’m just wondering if anyone could give me some guidance of what to expect? Potential issues and, the main one - costs! I’ve read everything from loose petrol cap to new engine needed at this point :pac:

Coil pack perhaps, about €50/60 and then maybe 15-20 minutes to fit, maybe total of €100/€120 all done including diagnostic. Hard to tell though without the fault code being read.

The mechanic diagnosed (I’m paraphrasing here) dirty/corroded coils causing the engine to misfire.

He tried cleaning them to see if it would make any difference, but no such luck. Getting them replaced today.

Of all the issues that an engine light could mean, a dodgy coil pack is probably the cheapest to fix.
