Upgrade old system with smart controller? Which one?

So I've got a house with an old style system (oil boiler, single channel with no thermostats) controlled with a 24hr mechanical timer (apt24).

The timer has given up the ghost and I'm wondering if it might be a good idea to upgrade.

Anything would be a big improvement - 7-day programme, boost, holiday mode...but I'd really like something that I can work when out of the house if cost isn't too big a factor.

I've started looking into them and got a little lost. Am I wrong or do most work off thermostats (which I don't have).

Can someone give me a clue as to what my options are with such a simple system?

There are a few options, Nest, Climote, Honeywell. Maybe take a look online. Electric Ireland doing some deals including installation, take a look there. We have 2 Nest and find them good. You can set schedule, turn it in and off from your phone..

I have the exact same system.

No stat just a switch. To turn on .

So replaced it with a sonoff th16 Amp and a thermostat sensor for the guts of 20 dollars.

Installed about three weeks now . Excellent.

Can remote turn on from smart phone anywhere. Can voice control with Google assistant. Can set timers or on off depending on the temperature.

    And no monthly fees.
