    Hi, can anyone help?
Have a HP laptop and looks like the hard drive has failed. I have a lot of documents on it that I need to access. Can these be retrieved if I bring them to somewhere (PC World or similar)?

    Tanks for any replies

What are the symptoms? May not be the HDD that's the issue.

Stuck in diagnosing your PC. When I went online I followed some instructions to diagnose the problem and it looks like Hard Drive check failed.

    Thanks for replying.

I'm assuming that the PC's OS is Windows 10

Try starting your PC and use the F11 to boot into recovery mode.
Next select Advanced and then Command prompt. From here run chkdsk c: /r /x

chkdsk only scans, so you will need to run sfc /scannow and reboot,. Hopefully that will. solve the issue.

If the disk is indeed failing I would want to recover data first before going down this route. Stressing the disk with scans and repairs could just be enough to knock it over the edge to complete failure. If data recovery is the goal here, then I would focus on that first.

Agreed, reducing the stress on the drive is paramount. Hopefully, he has a caddy/dock in which to place the drive, and another PC on which the drive can be accessed. Guess he could also try Hiren’s BootCD (https://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/).

Would this delete anything? I’m wondering if best to bring to PC World to see if they can recover data and buy a new laptop????
