Bit lost in role and need advice

I will try to keep this as vague as possible without going into the boring details of my job.

I'm just looking for advice on how to get my role more structured and have a sense of direction.

Hopefully others have experienced similar and can provide me with some advice.

Basically I work in a finance related role as a TL.

My company seems to be a bit all over the place with middle management of different departments trying to steer the company focus.

My TL role had been changed and I was made a client relationship executive dealing with an existing portfolio of clients therefore not having a team of my own or managing the niche department.

This was due to a structural changed of the company.

I was annoyed I lost my TL position but have just decided to get on with things for the Betterment of the company.

Since then.. I have 1 manager telling me I will be managing/leading the existing executives ( currently not my area/team) and I'm still only in training myself so this seems all premature yet but I've had good success in my previous TL and managerial roles.

But also... I'm being dragged into
IT related projects and customer focused projects by another manager due my willingness to help and skillset.

Thirdly ... My existing department is still operational so that requires focus and attention and daily interaction and leading of my team so that is another direction / work load

And the 4th is I haven't been told by the top manager/CEO (small company) that I will be leading any team and it is coming from a middle manager and I'm hearing mixed information from another middle manager.

Everyone seems to have an opinion and I'm being move about and told what to do like a pawn

This is all wrapped up in my so called training plan that is not existence as there is no direction so I'm trying to learn on the job while doing IT projects and run an existing department and team.

The current manager of the executive department is leaving and doesnt seem to care so in summary I think the whole thing is heading for crash.

Have you had any similar experience on how to steer my career back on path and take control of this situation.

    I need advice.

People who can't manage themselves can't manage others and you will not progress while bad management and lack of direction persists, use the time to look for work in a properly managed company and get out, you can't fix everyone else.

Why don't you sit down with your current manager and ask for some clarity on what you main priorities should be.
Explain that the changes in your role and caused some confusion with you being pulled in different directions and you just want to be sure that you are focusing on the right tasks.

This is the funny thing. I'm not even reporting into someone it seems I've kinda of left to my own devices unless I go to a general manager.

    It's all a mess

Oh I worked in a role like this, except I took on the responsibility myself because no one else would.

I'll share my story and then relate it back to your situation.

I joined a company as a software engineer. I immediately noticed EVERYTHING was a mess - no version control, no QA process, no specifications, no release process, etc. Literally everything was wrong and no one seemed to give a ****.

This is a large company. About 10,000 employees.

So I started trying to fix everything, slowly improving each process.

As a result, I got promoted twice (up to director level) within 9 months.

What I'm trying to say is this:

CHAOS IS GREAT FOR YOUR CAREER!!

And the fact that everyone wants you involved in their projects makes me think you are rated in the company.

If I were you I'd do this:

Write down the problems you see, and a solution for each problem. Do this for each of the departments you're being dragged into. Give this document to the CEO. (Page 1 is a summary; the subsequent pages are problem + solution).

It seems there are structural problems, process problems, etc. List them all PLUS THE SOLUTIONS.

    This will do three things:

    1. It gives the CEO a chance to step in and fix everything.
    2. He will appreciate you.
    3. He will create a more clear role for you, and get you out of the other teams' messes.

I noticed in your post you never said you're unhappy. Do you like working in this company?
