Gaming PC advice please

Hi all,

Apologies if this has been covered already.

I would like to purchase a gaming PC or Laptop for a family member. They have a Xbox one at present, but they would like a gaming PC as that's what friends have and also wants to use it for internet (school projects etc..)

My budget is around 1,000euro.

What can I expect to get for that? Where do I start as I've no clue really. I don't it has to be huge memory just enough to play games and browse the net

Is this family member nearing college? If so I would recommend a laptop. Otherwise, the desktop is always a better deal. Would I be correct in thinking that Fortnite would be the main game of choice?

the argos pc is a trap for the unwary.
many users here could recommend a custom build for 500 euro which is streets ahead. 50 euros extra usually covers the assembly of the pc too
would also suggest looking at a good quality standard HD monitor for now, tend to be cheaper and can be upgraded later

Do not buy from Argos, they have nothing of value.

If you must buy from a mainstream vendor, Dell have a decent machine here:

i5-8400 + GTX 1060 6Gb for €900.

However the big UK vendors (Scan, Overclockers, etc) make custom-built machines which are as good or better.

That Dell is solid. There will likely be better deals next week, which I suspect why the price is up on 1000€ in that link right now. It happens every year, prices creep up slowly during November and then "wow" big sale which looks really impressive.

I don't mind retail shops having higher prices but that PC in Argos would struggle to run games at low settings, hate to think of the disappointment so many people must feel when they buy stuff like that and realise how poor it is.

Don't have time to check right now but accepting the higher prices versus buying online, if you have to buy local, curry's have proper gaming machines. I'm sure Argos have much better options than that too.

If you tried to run some of the latest games on that one you posted they actually wouldn't even run smoothly on lowest possible settings.

The only machines PCWorld have in that price range (according to their site) are GTX 1050/1050 Ti based.

@OP the GTX 1060 is twice as fast as a GTX 1050 Ti.

Yeah it's sad how transparently obvious it is, it definitely was €900 when I linked it yesterday! :pac:
