How to become a photographer

I want to study photography. Not as a hobby! Can someone please point me in the right direction. I was looking at Griffith collage. But i live in Galway so Dublin is out. Most people are telling me to do night classes, camera club or go online. My local camera club seem to be processionals. Don't know if i trust the online…
