How long to get an employment contract?

    I recently accepted a job (verbally). Eleven days have passed and no employment contract has been sent. I followed up 3 times within the eleven days and was promised that the contract would be sent on those days. Still nothing. I am anxious to receive it as I need to hand in my notice to my current job asap as my required notice period is quite long. Is this normal? Am I being too impatient?

    I meant more in terms of common practice. I realise legally employers only have to supply you with one two months after your start date. However, I would not be willing to hand in my notice without a signed contract. It's been twelve days since I verbally accepted the position still no contract.

    OK.

    If they want you, they normally issue a contract pretty quickly.

    I'd be worried if I were you. They're already breaking promises.

    Check out the legality of a verbal agreement. I've seen a case before where someone got a few months salary after verbally agreeing a contract then the company backed out. A verbal agreement can still be a legal binding contract.

    Very hard to prove though. I'm assuming a few days to a week is the usual waiting time between a verbal offer and acceptance and a written contract? The position is in a small business with no hr department. The boss does all the hiring. It's two weeks now...I keep getting fobbed off which is incredibly frustrating but I can't pester too much as it is a very good opportunity and I don't want to irritate the boss as they are very busy and they probably feel their word is sufficient...I'm resigning from a permanent job though so I want to be sure they don't renege. I'd feel a lot more comfortable having signed a contract

    Easiest way is to pick up the phone and ask when they are in a position to send you your contract. No sensible employer expects you to resign without a written and signed contract in your hands.

    I emailed the boss (their own work email) (almost impossible to get through to them by phone) as they are constantly in meetings and out of the office) on Thursday night. No response. I think I'll have to give up on this job as it's becoming a joke now. It's been over two weeks since the verbal offer. This is just disrespectful. Thank god I didn't hand in my notice!!
