If someone is going away for about a year, is there a mailing address service they can use to hold letters rather than forward them?

An Post have a PO box service but it's expensive and not all organisations will post to a PO box address.

    Are there any alternatives?

Ask your local post office about post restante. Im not sure if they still do it but its basically where they dont deliver to your address but instead you collect it at the post office. It would still mean you need a family member to collect and would need to okay this in advance with the postmaster.

Post forwarding can go to an international address too as well as domestic, its pricey enough but might be an option.

Other than that you could check the prices of private companies who offer PO boxes, this is one https://www.mbe.co.uk/irelanddublinrathmines and there is likely others.

edit- actually another solution might be to buy a secure post box and fix it to the wall of your house. Then tell the postman to deliver anything with your name on it into the postbox. Give a family member/friend a key and ask them to clear it out every few weeks. If doing this make sure to put a No Junk Mail sticker on it or it will fill up pretty quick (and likely attract burglars)
