2006 Diesel Fiat Idea. Has always flown through the NCT. Partner got a new automatic and I've been using that for my longer runs and just tipping around in the Fiat. This is the reading from the report:

    Smoke 7.290/m Limit - Turbo 2.50/m

I was thinking of taking her on a spin to Newry and then putting her through the test later on that day. Would this be enough to bring down the reading? Should I put some additive into the tank as well and if so, which one? She was serviced about six months ago.

Id add dipetane and drive it hard for a week and stick it back through. Check if the air filter is manky. After that your looking at bringing it to a mechanic. Dipetane is 200:1 mix. So 250ml in a 50 litre tank.

Just make sure the engine is super hot when it goes through the next nct.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Put in the dipetane and took it to Newry today.
Went through the re-test tonight and the emissions were perfect but it failed on the headlight alignment  One of my dipped beams were off last time and I took it to a well know garage chain yesterday to have it re-aligned. Unfortunately they aligned the good beam to the bad one and now they're both too high :mad::mad::mad: Going to cost another €28 to go through the re-test again.

Any advice as to how to speak to the garage about this? I'm going to ask for the work to be done correctly and for the €25 cost of this to be refunded. Anything else? I'm really mad over this. How hard can this be? It's not like they're a backstreet garage?

Sounds like they aligned it against a wall. You really need the headlight alignment tool.

Even if they did a rough alignment against a wall they still moved the Pass beam to match the Fail one......if they had tried to match the wrong one to the correct one they would probably have succeeded. So, I'd say the "mechanic" doesn't know the meaning of offside and nearside ;),

OP just show the garage both fail sheets and demand a free realignment. BTW when you say 'a well known garage chain' it doesn't start with the letter A by any chance ????

    There's your problem ;).
Bring it back to them and insist they get it right this time (without any charge).

edit; and when you've done that, stay well away from them in future...even just for tyres.

I want a refund and the job done properly! I already bought four tyres from them last year and they were fine to deal with so i expected the same level of service. My mistake!

Honestly I'd guess the best you can hope for is a free realignment. If you can get them to pay for your NCT retest consider it a bonus.
Apart from that there are plenty of smaller Independent Mechanics all over the country who will always know a lot more about any Car than than your current Crowd. No matter where you live you can simply ask for recommendations on forums like this and get some idea of where to go.

As for Tyres most of the local Tyre Companies will always beat these guys on price and service (and usually less BS:)) .

Update - I went back yesterday and had the job done again. They were very apologetic and gave me a refund without me asking. Happy enough. €28 for the re-test and I got €25 back. Only out of pocket by €3 and the inconvenience of the test. I can live with that. Hope it bloody passes now!
