Floating gauge for oil tank level?

    Hi, I've seen these things online:

    Do they have to be installed on compatible opening in the tank? Could they be retrofitted to an older tank if possible, I can't imagine you can just cut a hole in the tank and pop it in...
    I'm looking for one for the mother's tank instead of having to climb up and drop a stick in to check the oil levels(!)
