Longines new vs 2nd hand

    Hi all,

Looking to buy a longines HydroConquest automatic

There's currently one for sale that is 'unworn' but purchased in December 2017. Its listed for sale on adverts for 850.

I'm also going to be in the UK next week and they're 840 GBP. So around 970 euro.

Question is this, would you prefer to pay the additional 120ish to buy directly from dealer and have the full warranty or take the chance and purchase the 2nd hand one as it still has the stickers and protective film on.

I've tried to get the seller to decrease and he has but only to 805.

    Any advice/thoughts welcomed.

I'm also considering buying one of these. You can get them new from Montredo for 879e. Almost all dealers seem to be the same price from what I can see.

They go for a little bit cheaper on eBay - for example this one is 649 GBP but didn't sell last time round so you might get it for a bit less.

My hesitation has been to hold out for a good one second hand (I want the 39mm in blue which seems to be rarer). You can get them at times for 500-600e. If you buy new you are looking at that depreciation within a matter of months in case you ever want to sell on.

Definitely wouldn't give 850 for one on adverts or ebay though

I'm thinking for the sake of 200 ish it's probably better to just purchase from the Longines boutique and have peace of mind. I did ask about discount as I know most retailers here would give 10% but he said it wasn't possible in the UK. Not sure how true this is but I'll find out on the day.

Considering the black one in 41mm is 1090 here (and I can't find it in stock in fields) buying new in UK might be the best way to go.

I tried an AD in France last week too and they wouldn't budge on the 1070 price on that for some reason.

How much more is a warranty from an AD in the UK worth over an online sale for cheaper from somewhere like Montredo?

    Prices seem to be:
    600 used but good condition
    870 Montredo or online
    960 UK high street seller
    1070 IE

    ?

870 on Montredo would be best but they don't have the black 41mm Automatic.

Might also be worth trying Ernest Jones. They had one recently but don't think model number or size was clear. They also had £100 off £500 spend and 10% for newsletter sign up (not sure if you could add both codes)

Nice. Thanks for the heads up I'll have a look there too.

I'll need to make my mind up pretty soon as I'm in UK tomorrow and back Tuesday.

Heading to kildare today and I'll have a look and see if they have any.

What airport are you flying to? There is normally circa 20% off them at Gatwick-Ernest Jones I think-(presume Heathrow too but I rarely use it). They ordered one for me previously as they didn’t stock it and delivered it to a local branch for collection. I’m pretty certain I’ve seen hydroconquests in stock though.

If you are going to buy new get a Revolut card and £840 works out to be €956 at today’s rate but that will improve on Monday when the banks open
I would get the new one tbh as it’s not much of a saving to make it worth the risk, it’s auto so could have taken a knock and need a service, you never know with used.
Buying new you get peace of mind full warranty and if you get bored in a year or so you won’t lose a pile of money.
Ernest Jones and other jewellers are having big sales in the uk and when I was there last week everywhere seemed to be offering 0% finance over 5 years.

Have the revolut ready to go for tomorrow.

Hopefully with Black Friday around the corner I can convince one of the jewellers to give me at least some discount.

The longines boutique couldn't offer any but said they could give me a travel case 😂

New is definitely the best way to go I've decided especially when the difference is only 100 or so.

Let us know how you get on please - your post just reminded me that I have a meeting in London on Black Friday. Might have to pull a sickie and knock off at 3 or so

Will do! Anyone have any recommendations where most jewellers can be found close together? Save me running around town

Hour passion or Ernest Jones at the airport will get you the equivalent of VAT off.

Cheers, flying terminal 2 so no hour passion unfortunately. Ernest Jones do have a spend 500GBP save 100 or spend 1000gbp save 200. Not sure if that's only online so I'll be starting there which would bring the watch down to 740gbp

Picked one up from Ernest Jones today. 840gbp but they gave the 100 back for spending over 500 and I got it insured for 90 quid so good bargain for anyone looking!

Think the offer is over now but I'm sure they'll have something on again before xmas

Was that at the airport ?

No Ernest Jones on Oxford Street.

Watch cost 740GBP and insurance was around 90 for 3 years.

Good deal considering list price in Ireland is €1,090
