Community Radio 257

I was reminded today of the existence of an early '80s pirate called Community Radio 257. From what I read, it broadcast from Portmarnock in north Dublin. I had known before that Greg Gaughren (Radio Nova) and Mark Byrne (pilot and ex-broadcaster for many stations) were involved. I learnt today that one Brian McColl (Nails Mahoney) was also involved with it - it was actually his website that I saw today! I notice that all three above ended up sooner or later on another Portmarnock-based station: Sunshine Radio!

Does anyone have any more info on Community Radio 257, such as who operated it, who else presented on it and how long did it operate for?

    Hi Declan ,
Never head of this station before , just looking at the article in the Irish Times about them interfering with Dublin airport . B

Is there a reason they went for a potential untuneable frequency that never existed on any international frequency plan?

257 was a wavelength (metres) not a frequency (kHz) on MW

257m corresponds to 1170 kHz MW (where in parts of this country a very weak Swansea Sound is audible during the day)

Not totally sure but I think John Thewlis was involved in Radio 257, straight after ARD closed down (and Dave Reddy possibly).
Could be that the community station was born out of Radio 257?

AFAIK, ARD / Radio 257 was a different station completely and would merit another thread. Many well-known people went through that station. Incidentally, Radio 257 reverted back to the name ARD after a spell. Thread for someone!

No, I'm pretty sure Community Radio 257 was unrelated. I only became aware of its existence in recent years. I think it was a smaller operation, but, as you can see, at least three reasonably big names went through it.

All three of them had some national radio experience: Greg (Century Radio), Mark (Century Radio, Atlantic 252, Radio Ireland / Today FM) and Brian (2FM, Atlantic 262 and Radio Ireland / Today FM).

So again, does anyone have any more names associated with Community Radio 257?

Completely forgot that the wavelength concept existed :o

Before Radio Nova (the pirate) arrived, it was all meters and the wavelength concept. Not only did Radio Nova start the move in pirates to FM (or VHF as it used to be called on RTE), but it also referred to kilohertz for MW (or AM) listeners.

While all very interesting, it does not help me with this particular thread!
