Car battery chargers

    Hi,

Let’s say one leaves the internal light on a car on all night or by mistake leaves the lights on.

And you come out in morning and car won’t start. This has happened twice in last while (yes I know, flippant)

The AA sorted this for me, but on one occasion I missed an important event due to them being busy etc. Fair enough.
When they did sort it, they purposely did not jump start from another car, instead they had this portable box, hooked it up to battery, left it on for about 10 seconds (yes 10 seconds and silence, no noise from the portable box etc) then told me to try and start and boom, job done.

I have been told by 2 different people that with ‘modern’ cars that it is not a great idea to jump start them in the traditional sense of hooking them up to another car.

I was then thinking of buying a device to do this meself.

Would This do the same job?

You can still do a traditional jump start, but with a lot of modern cars having sophisticated tech, there is more chance of a bad jump causing damage.

The unit you link to may work, but it depends on your battery capacity, age of battery, how flat it is. The unit the breakdown guy had will be in a different league however, so you can't expect the exact same results. Think of a coffee shop coffee machine vs having a Nespresso at home.

    Understood. Thanks for reply.

That lidl one only an example. Had a quick look on amazon. This one looks decent.

They come in different strengths for different engines. What car will you be trying to start?

    80A wouldn't start a moped....you want at least 400 but over 1000 is ideal

I know. But then read all the 4 and 5 stars of which there are a lot more.

I got this one from Halfords over a year ago. Has been used numerous times and can’t fault it. It has saved me a few times even during the cold spell earlier this year. Handy for camping too running phones and cooler box!

Yeh...although as said it also has a lot more positive reviews.
I have the Nocco GB70 and it started my 3.0 diesel about 10 times off one charge - this was a time when I had a crapped out battery and was waiting several days for the replacement to be delivered.

We use that same unit in our Garage many times a day and have yet to have an issue with it, cars always fire up straight away.

Not sure what to make of that. In the main text on the right it says

Jump starter suitable for petrol engines up to max. 3000cc and diesel engines up to max. 2000cc

In smaller text at the bottom it says

    Disclaimer:
    Jump-starter suitable for:
Petrol engines up to max. 2.0L displacement
Diesel engines up to max. 1.6L displacement

Coincidentally, just had a Noco GB40 with a case delivered today from eBay. It definitely doesn't feel cheap and nearly every review I've seen has been overwhelmingly positive. I guess it's one of those things where you won't know until you need to use it, but this review was enough for me:

    Think it was around €140?

I've come home from working overseas to not having the car start in the airport car park, and it's something I'm quite keen to never happen again!
