    Hi,

I have a laptop that's about a decade old, haven't logged on in years and it's taking up space. Can someone recommend the best way to recycle or donate it?

    Thanks a million

Drop it off at any weee recycling facility, it's free.

Or stick it on the free section on adverts.

Thanks for that! Do I need to clear it first before doing either of those things? Tech dope here

That would be wise. There's lots of tutorials online for how to properly wipe a drive, even if they're overkill for what it would have been used for. Otherwise you can physically remove the hard disk and smash it with a hammer.

As for other ways to recycle/donate a quick google turned up:

I wouldn't be so sure that these machines are actually repurposed, I would imagine that they are recycled and melted down for gold which is really common. Perhaps then the money is spent on other charitable purposes. Given the machine is 10 years old it might be a bit beyond what is worth using. Although it should still be just about fine running basic tasks with linux.
