    Hi there,

For the last few days my download speeds have dropped from the usual 27Mb/s to approx 6Mb/s. I tried to log into the router admin via 192.168.1.254 as I have done previously, but the page no longer loads.

Instead if I browse to 192.168.0.1 it's loading a welcome page for the Virgin Media Hub 3.0 router! My PC is physically connected to the Eircom e-fibre router (F1000 model I believe).

    How has this happened?
Can you revert us back to our normal speed and the correct default gateway please?

I know Virgin have installed some sort of equipment around the estate but we haven't switched providers.

    Regards,
    Andrew.

    Hi,

If you run ipconfig or ifconfig, does it list the gateway of 192.168..0.1 for the physical adapter?

    Hi there,

ipconfig /all lists 192.168.0.1 for the Default Gateway, DHCP Server and one of the DNS servers.

Hi, hope you don't mind, this has me curious.
If you run arp -a can you match the IP to the MAC.
Run this against a MAC address checker to trace back manufacturer. (sorry if I'm explaining what you know already)

Is it possible you're connected to a neighbour's WiFi or something? Are you the only device physically connected to the F1000? Does it happen to other devices?

If you run ipconfig again are there multiple interfaces in the 192.168.0.X range?

I suspect its actually using Powerline adapters. You've just discovered the issue with them.

In the OP states they’re connected physically presumably that means via Ethernet

arp -a matches 192.168.0.1 to a MAC address with a manufacturer called Compal Broadband Networks, Inc.
I do see 192.168.1.254 in the list with it's correct MAC address as per the back of the eircom router (ZyXEL).

The PC is defo not connected to wifi, cat5 into the back of the router. However, you've got me thinking - I have a homeplug connected into it also and I'm wondering is that the problem. The next door neighbour (semi-detached) recently got Virgin Media installed (they run a cable from their box on the path to a box on the neighbours house). I wonder if they are  causing the problem.

I just disconnected the home plug from the router, turned it off and on and I can now access 192.168.1.254.

    Problem solved it seems.

Yes, connected via cat5 but there was also a homeplug going into the same router. What's the issue with them that you mention?

    Thanks.

You could be physically connected via Ethernet but simultaneously connected to something else via WiFi causing conflicts. But Ed-E hit the nail on the head, homeplugs connected the OP's and neighbour's network meaning there were two DHCP servers competing for clients. Their PC found the neighbours' first which offered it an address in the 192.168.0.X subnet, so they couldn't talk to their own router without manual intervention.

You've merged your network with your neighbour (up to 3 houses in either direction). Homeplugs(Powerline) have an encryption feature, if you don't use it this is what happens. Even when you do you and your neighbour both using homeplugs can mean you both get reduced performance.

The COMPAL(Hub 3.0) is responding faster than the F1000/2000 and thus its your default gateway. If you remove the homeplug and reboot your computer (or ipconfig /renew) you'll theng get your own routers control panel.

Then, read the manual of your plugs.

    Understood. Thanks again.

Thanks for the reply Tracey. It's sorted now, it was a Homeplug issue rather than a problem with Eir.

    Regards,
    Andrew.
