Car cuts out

    Looking for advice

My wife's ford fiesta 2012 cuts out suddenly when driving. She gets no warning at all and she can start it up straight away. This can happen at any stage when driving. Left it in the garage but they couldn't find any issue and nothing came up on a diagnostics
Anyone have this issue before or know what could be wrong?

Tbh, if the garage with a scanner and the car itself cannot find the fault then this thread is really a longshot.

    How often does it happen?
    Is car at operating temp?
Does it happen more when it's raining?
Did at any time any lights on dash light up?
Is the garage a Ford place or generic/indy?
Is there a Ford place around?

Does it happen in straight lines or when turning, or both?

She said it happens more when going around roundabouts but as far as I know it happened on straight as well

Garage said they will change the fuel filter to see if that works but he said he is stumped

Brother in law had a similar issue years ago. Was actually dodgy wiring somewhere (im assuming ignition) that whenever he turned briskly, it would disconnect and cut out.

    Check the battery terminal connections.

Wife had this with a fiesta years ago, nearly always happened at roundabouts or when slowing down, it was a dodgy speedometer sensor that caused the issue

Just an update.wife said when the engine cuts out the electrics still work.lights are on and radio is playing.two lights appear on the dashboard engine warning light and exclamation with a cog around it

Had a similiar issue with a Mitsubishi Spacestar a few years ago. Turned out to be a faulty lambda sensor. Replaced that & the car is still with us giving no problems since.

Edit:- When I say "similiar" I mean "identical"

I know the late 90's/early 00's fiestas had a common fault with the speed sensors, mainly cut the engine off when coasting to a stop though. Not sure about your model but might be something to try replace if it cheapy.

Just in with the mechanic and he changed the fuel filter and emptied the fuel tank.he said there was a lot of crap diesel and dirt. Filled the tank up but still wasn't running smoothly.he thinks sum gunk got sucked up so gonna keep it in for the 3rd day to try and sort it

Let us know how you got on in case someone has a similar issue

    Ecu ?

My sister has one and mechanic told me it can be an issue reading the key ecu can take in water.

Fuel pump could be an issue too as on my mondeo it cuts out if I put power down.

Sounds like a fuel filter. Did you replace the filter lately? Go get an original fuel filter. Exact same thing happened to my ford mondeo and all it was was the fuel filter which waa a generic one not original

After 3 days its all sorted. A sort of dirty diels was cleaned out but the main issue seemed to be a cable in the engine(can't remember the name)
When the brakes were being applied the engine was moving forward and with this eroded cable being faulty it was making the engine think the ignition was being turned off

There is nothing scarier than a car cutting out while driving.

Especially on a motorway or in rush hour. And the wailing siren alerts would put years on your life.

We had a similar issue with both our Fords. Always ended up electrical.

CMax - Traction Control System light would come on while driving (yellow car icon with skid lines). Car would go into reduced acceleration mode and then eventually die.

Resolution: The Body Control Module (like an onboard computer) had bad wiring and water damage. The car probably thought it was underperforming and went into defensive mode. New BCM was fitted. So far, so good.

SMax - again, the Traction Control System light was coming on. The car would drive for a day. But then it started to stall while driving. Took it to two different mechanics, who tried a few things and released it as fixed (filters, crankshaft, camshafts).... It broke down a few minutes later. Insisted that they looked at the wiring and they found a few loose clusters of wires. I'm not 100% sure that it's gone away forever.
