two wire thermostat move (without rewiring)

I'm in a relatively new house with air-water heat pump, timer (EPH R Series 2-zone) for up/dowstairs located in utility room, with two mechanical thermostats (EPH CM2) in hall and master bedroom.

I simply want to move the downstairs thermostat from hall into living area to get an accurate measurement and control of living area.

Is this as simple as buying wireless unit which has a receiver replacing existing hall thermostat, then with a portable part of unit that I can move to preferred location? Can someone suggest what could work to meet this requirement?

Looking at Nest units tonight, the Nest Thermostat seems to replace the timer unit, allowing me to position Nest in living room, with the hall mechanical thermostat redundant. However looks like would then need a 2nd Nest to maintain control for upstairs zone, so expensive.

Is there a simple solution to this with all the SMART and otehr devices now available?
