could be an immob issue.I had a 06 gti and same story.Car would turn over once look like it was starting and then die. It was either key, sender unit in the ignition barrel or immob which was built into the dash cluster in mine. Unforuntely for me it was the later and not a cheap fix. Other option Is code it out by removing the ecu and getting a remapping crowd to remove the immobiliser.

Hi, took out the battery and car started. drove it yesterday probably started it twice during the day. However, this morning same issue again. Phoned an auto place and they seemed to think key was ok and possibly the immbol itself.

mine immobilser was built into the dask cluster ,had to be coded in the factory , €450 + vat plus fitting if I remember correctly ,I removed the immobiliser from the ecu instead.

So you took out the immobiliser totally..... does that affect your insurance etc Was onto a key company and they said its probably not a key issue. they would diagnose issue but if immobilers they repair or replace but do not disconnect.
