Recap BBC Micro PSU

    Hi

    I have just bought an 8 bit micro from the early eighties and I have been reading up about it. It seems that capacitors in the psu are likely to blow so I am reluctant to power it up until the psu is recapped.

    Is there anyone in Dublin that could do this for me? The necessary components are on order and should be with me during the week.

    Sorry, I should’ve said that I don’t have any soldering or electronics experience. I see lidl have a soldering station. Do you think that it would be safe for a noob to give a psu a go?

    The lidl soldering iron is like a hot rusty nail - not great at all. There is a $5 usb one thats supposed to be decent if you are on a budget.

    I have lots of devices from the 80's still that still work perfectly. Myself I wouldn't go swapping all the caps for no reason - they could be just fine. Open the device and see if any look swollen or leaky.

    The two smaller caps would show signs of cracks on the body indicating replacement would be advised.

    I might even consider digging out my BBC Micro B to see if it still works ...... its been quite a number of years since I had a look. :)
