FF want those that purchase illegal ciggys and other goods to be fined. Seems like an excellent plan, most of it is not fit for consumption anyway.
Would have thought it was already illegal to purchase this stuff, but maybe not?

How about they focus on enforcement of existing laws about selling stolen or counterfeit goods, instead of distracting themselves with new laws that won't be enforced?

Why don't more people understand this very simple concept

Agreed, This applies across the board, littering is one example that comes to mind.

    Absolutely.

In Dublin there are people selling illegal cigs and tobacco outside the Moore St door of The Ilac every day of the week and it has been going on for as long as I can remember. How difficult would it be to stop, if anyone really wanted to?

It's happening every day, in plain daylight, for decades, and as with other blind eye issues our overload guardians will busy themselves with inventing new laws instead of investigating why current laws are not enforced. If the war on whatever (drugs, insurance scams, rural crime) hasn't worked, it's only because we haven't actually had the war.

It seems that it's better to be seen trying to do something new, than actually doing something with what you already have.

If it's too cheap it then there's the possibility it's been stolen.
IIRC 5 years is the threshold for citizens arrest.

    Current law is http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/eli/2001/act/50/section/18/enacted/en/html
Where a person has in his or her possession stolen property in such circumstances (including purchase of the property at a price below its market value) that it is reasonable to conclude that the person either knew that the property was stolen or was reckless as to whether it was stolen,

    ...
a fine or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 5 years

On the other hand , if it's counterfeit there's already £1,000 fines on the books and customs or revenue may have probable cause to investigate you further.
