I have been trying to get my head around the available receivers but i could do with some help as i am not familiar with the various options.

I have a Sky Dish (sub expired) and am currently with Virgin Media with an awful horizon box. I have an Nvidia Shield which i am happy with for Plex/Netflix etc so i don't need that. Contract is coming to end shortly with VM so i am exploring other options.

I am looking for a receiver is capable of :

    FreeSat/Saorview/IPTV
    4K capable (for future proofing)
    Recording/Series Linking

Is it possible to have FreeSat/Saorview and IPTV all show up in a single EPG or have them together in a Favourites of some kind?

With Saorview will i need an aerial to connect to the tuners provided in the Receiver?

    Thanks All.

FreeSat is branded software on top of a FTA (Free To Air) satellite box. FreeSat receivers would not get Saorview. You will need a triple tuner combo box instead.
4K adds a big premium to the price of current combo boxes. Apart from paid streaming you are unlikely to see free 4k content on satellite or Saorview in the near future.
Saorview needs a conventional aerial. An outdoor aerial is recommended but you may be lucky enough to get away with a set top, indoor aerial or one fitted in an attic. Do not fall for any "boosted" or amplified plug in yoke as they are a con.
With linux based combo boxes it is easy to mix Saorview and satellite channels in any order you wish. I cannot comment on adding IPTV to that mix. AFAIK Netflix is not available on a combo box.
Gigablue and Vu+ are well known for their 4K boxes. I'm sure other makes are also available.

Maybe something like this would suit .....

    Android 6.0

Also, that is not Android TV ;)

Not sure what your point/s is/are.

Nothing wrong with Android 6 as an OS.
It does what it is supposed to do.

There is no requirement for 'Android TV'.

I have Linux boxes running on 3.14 kernel while my PC uses 4.18.
Should I dump those boxes because they don't have the 'latest & greatest' kernel?
They do what they are supposed to do and do it well.
    I ask no more.
I will eventually update them I guess.

I wonder if the OS can be updated on that box ...... possibly if the manufacturer supports it.

As I said I have no seen one, only read about it and viewed a few videos.
For its price it is hard to beat IMO.

I'd expect the latest box to have a more modern version of Android and get support and updates. Kodi 19 will not have support for Android 6.0.

It's marketed as an Android TV box, it's not Android TV it's a hacked version of touchscreen Android from a tablet. The Op has a Shield so knows what Android TV is.

This is the 'AndroidTV' logo ...... not 'Android TV box'.
    220px-Android_tv_logo.svg.png

It also has freesat in its name .... but that does not mean it has 'Freesat' firmware on board.

Yes it can be confusing for the unwary ...... but a quick read of the specs etc would enlighten.

I do not recall reading any claim that this - or other similar boxes - run AndroidTV - example
    https://www.geekbuying.com/item/Freesat-GTC-Amlogic-S905D-2GB-16GB-TV-BOX-389145.html

But, as the OP has AndroidTV on a device presently, then yes it is reasonable to give a 'head's up' that this is not AndroidTV OS.

    To add to Gerry’s response...

If you look at the Tiviar Alplaplus thread, that box will do a lot/all of what you require. If you go back over the last 10 posts, or so, everything in those images are already working on my image. Gerry’s picture of IPTV Player shows the potential, all for under €200.

I cannot comment on integrating IPTV into the EPG, but many plugins are available...

We left Sky a few months ago, after being with them for 19 years, we are both sorry we didn’t move sooner.

Hehehehehe .... a video from someone on the internet should be taken as .....

Here is one of the first (if not THE first) approved AndroidTV OS box with tuners
    https://www.geniatech.com/product/atv598max/

Unfortunately it has only a single tuner input capable of both DVB-T and DVB-S apparently, so would not do all the OP requires.
I don't think they are on sale in these parts yet.

Nonetheless it is an interesting box for a single TV location.

I think the Tiviar Alpha would probably meet most of the OPS requirements bar the 4k which is pointless as there will never be much 4k content from satellite as it uses too much bandwidth, that will never change. Most 4k sources are online and the Op already has a Shield for that.

I too think the Tiviar would be the better buy .... but there are other options to consider. ;)

My reasoning for the 4K is more for the IPTV end. No harm in having it as an option anyhow. The Shield is great but to keep things as simple as possible i would like for the receiver to be the source of Satellite/IPTV and the Shield for Netflix/Prime Video/Plex. Makes family use that bit easier.

I was looking at the Gigablue UHD UE with the optional DVB-C/T/T2 tuner (should it be a twin tuner rather than single?) with OpenATV. Any opinions on this?

Do it on the Shield. The Shield is probably the best 4k player there is. No satellite box has that CPU or GPU horsepower

Because the likes of Netflix is licensed proprietary software, I don't think it will be available on any enigma powered box. I would have thought that most if not all 4K Smart TVs have these apps already.
Saorview operates on 2 muxes (groups of channels). If you needed to watch/record RTÉ1 and RTÉ2 at the same time, you will need 2 DVB-T tuners to handle them. If that scenario is rare, a single DVB-T tuner would suffice.

I got the Gigablue last month and am delighted with it so far. Up to you really if you think it is worth the extra spend over the Tiviar but it is rock solid so far and the streaming function is quite useful. Going to get a unicable LNB at some point when I learn a bit more about it and experiment with that. Always good to have as project!
