You won't go wrong with a TL90 or T5050 depending on your budget

What are you looking to do with it?

Do you need a 4wd? You'll still get a 2wd at that HP if you don't need it. You're wasting horses pushing the 4wd if you don't need it, plus more things to go wrong with it and more expensive to maintain. Second hand 2wd yoke often not put under as much pressure by previous owner. Exception being if it had a loader on it. Older 2wd yokes that had a loader can have fair wear and tear up front.

Buy a bit more than you'll need right now (unless you already have that) but don't buy what you'll never need

First you have to decide on your budget. Then decide on prioties 4wd/2wd, floor change, shuttle, power shuttle, electric lift v manual lift, weight rating of hydraulic lift, loader v no loader. Do you want a 40k box on it.
All this will decided o an extend by your budget give it in 5k bands if you like. A well do you want to buy privately or from a dealer. Have you a brand choice.

I bought a clean 4wd McCormick CX 90 with a loader for sub 20k a few weeks ago. It is similar to a Case but with a stronger lift from a dealer. It is a right gobby little tractor, It has a manual shuttle while the hours are high it is a very clean tractor. It took me a while to buy this tractor.
A lot will depend on the work you going doing with it.

The CX I bought is virtually the same as a Case CX 90 except it has the older Case back end (2 pto shafts) however AFAIK this gives it a higher lift capacity than the Case CX 90 and it has not got a digital dash. I have a Case CX 80 2wd and the McCormick has a shorter nose. And the CX 80 is a tidy yoke as well.

Well wear. What type cab on it? Is it the flat roof stockman type? What loader on her, rossmore?

Yes rosmore low profile (flat thin top) cab on it. Ya Rossmore FL 60 loader only the physical head on loader had to be touched up on it.

Sounds like good value compared to the TL90's

Year 2003, 5000 hours. No loader, I prefer to put a loader on it myself less wear on the tractor. So next I will be on the lookout for a loader

You won't get much of a loader under €5k. Rossmore are about €6-7k fitted afaik. There is/was a trima on donedeal at £3250 sterling. Looked to have had a tough enouhh life too. If you can source brackets I know where there is a quicke 9 series self levelling that came off a MF4355.

New quicke was 9500 all in Iirc.

I'm also on the look out for a mid-range tractor. It would be mainly used for bales. 4wd. Any suggestions on what I should go for? I thought 10-15k would get me something handy but not a lot is catching my eye.

Not much in that range of tractor Zetors would be your best option anything else will be very tired. Something like these there is a loader with the 4WD

Yeah cos they are subsidised by CNH the same as AGCO machines. A Q36 in 2016 on a T5 cost 5k

Call monasterevin agriculture services. I got a new trima x21 ( same as new quicker) two years ago for around 5k. Fitted all new joystick etc on second hand quicker brackets

Any recommendations out there for a second hand tractor? Just to carry out the basic tasks - mainly silage feeding. 4wd would be a bonus. Contractors come in here to do all the big gigs so wouldn't be put doing anything heavy. Is there something that would be reliable for the 10k mark out there?

At that budget, I’d be looking for a good MF 290. You mightn’t think you need a heavy tractor, but if you’re feeding bales, you need a bit of weight to handle bales out of a modern baler...

For 10K you should nearly forget about 4wd. I presume you are going feeding bales with a rear spike. If you are willing to take your time you will pick up a nice clean 2wd with a shuttle or virtual shuttle for that money. This NH is in Leitrim a bit above budget but it is some thing like this you should be looking for. Having said that he is a private seller and will struggle to get much with 10K for it.

Case CX series 2wd'swould be around the same money or a tad cheaper. You should be able to get a real clean case 42 series for less than10K but they have not got a shuttle but the gearsticks are nice to use on RHS. Masseys are usually over priced and can be a bit rough. Stay away from Fords as too many issue with engines. Zetors would be an option. Something like this should nearly be in Budget
    https://www.donedeal.ie/tractors-for-sale/zetor/20666083

If you wanted to splash the Zetor below would last you for 20-30 years and maybe more but is over priced by 6-10K as you get a 4WD one with 3K hours for a bit less than 25K.

    https://www.donedeal.ie/tractors-for-sale/zetor-proxima-6421-2-wd-c-w-rossmore-front-loader/19884635

One thing to watch out for is that a lot of these 2wd's have only one set of spools try to get one with 2 sets it will allow you to use a hydraulic top link and a hydraulic implement as well/

Thanks for the information and advice guys, all very relevant. So I put a search into donedeal this morning to see what turns up with my budget. I came across this landini 8880 for 10k https://www.donedeal.ie/tractors-for-sale/landini-8880/19087773

Have ye any thoughts on it?

Thats the same lad that has the TL 90 in an earlier post. 4WD far better than 2WD. Actually dont think I would buy a 2WD for bales.

Looked at a JD 6220. Low hours. Very clean. Anyone aware of any issues with these tractors?
Considering purchasing. Going to use it for spreading slurry, mowing drawing in silage bales.

I assume it's an SE? No real issues, as far as I know. If she has low hours and clean, it's probably safe to assume that she's been looked after. If you continue to service it as required, she should be a great tractor...

I thought they used to be a bit light on the back-end compared to the non-blizzard equivalent? Even though I think they were kinda marketed as being the same except for a lower spec cab and missing some extras etc. Nothing wrong with them now. Just thought they were a fair bit lighter at the back

is 100 horsepower suffcient to agitiate a double slatted tank?

I reckon it depends more on the size and type of the agitator than the size of the tank

If the tractor will drive the agitator, the question would then be whether the agitator will do the job!
