Wife wants an android phone, first timer. Only requirements are:
    1. Can turn off *every* sound it makes - so, no sounds when receiving texts, when powering up, when fully charged, nothing.
    2. All of 1. achievable via Settings or some well defined UX that's provided by the phone directly. So, no rootkitting or bypassing the UI that comes with the phone

She's currently using a dying, elderly windows phone, which due to its antiquity and primitive Windows 8 UI, doesn't offer much in the way of sounds and she can turn them all off.

The only sound she's liable to leave on, is incoming phonecalls. Basically uses the phone for calls, texts and the rare app. Rare use of a browser

    Thanks for any recommendations

I think that's most of them.

That's possible on every single Android phone. What's her budget?

Between 100 and 200 euros. The local dealer's huawei's don't let you turn off the annoying sounds made when booting - per my investigation it seems you need to rootkit, there's no 'Settings' that turns it off.

Any brands you're aware of that do? Thanks for your reply

My OnePlus 5 makes no noise while booting. The latest is the OnePlus 6 but it's well over your budget. It even has a slider switch to disable all sounds and notifications, puts your phone in priority mode. Priority mode is adjustable, it's easy to set calls or even certain contacts to priority

How often will she be rebooting the phone in reality? Perhaps that aspect should be considered.

Anyhow most phones should allow all sounds to be switched off..Do Not Disturb, Silent, Mute etc.
And the reboot sound is usually an option also.

It's amazing that when people have to comprise, they usually adapt rather quickly and then such trivial things become a non-issue. IMHO of course :)

    mi a2 lite

get it on eglobal. 4gb/64 ram. 163 euro delivered in 7 to 10 days. no customs.

stock android (android one phone) so it's a very clean interface (no extra bloat apps e.g. from Huawei). no sound on booting up!

plus bonus of probably one of the longest battery life on any current android phone.

camera fine in good light. good screen. good size. nice modern build. fast smooth operation.
