Hi all, putting this up with mod permission.

My brother's laptop was stolen over the weekend from his room in Limerick city. It's been reported to the Gardai, who can't do much, and a good few secondhand/pawn shops were notified as well.

It's a custom built PC Specialist Cosmos Case laptop. It's 17.3inch and silver.

Financially, as a student, he can't afford to replace it and had worked long and hard to buy it in the first place. More than that was the things he had on it, including pictures he hadn't gotten around to backing up, and massive projects for college (Project Design) that the college computers can't really handle that effectively.

We're hoping that because it's not a branded laptop and is relatively unique, it will be found pretty quickly. If any of ye lovely people happen to notice it on the run up to Christmas and could let me know, that would be fantastic!

What model specifically? I wouldn't hold much hope for recovery tbh.

Sorry to hear and hope he gets it back

I was asked by a friend of mine who runs a small company and suspected an employee of lifting a PC , well the box part. He was asking me whether or not it could be traced or blocked using the licence key (subsequently he couldnt find that)
Google couldnt throw up anything but considering most PCs Laptops will connect to the internet, can the licence be traced?

That's interesting! I'm not sure if he does have the license key, but since the company is a custom based company, there's a chance they have a record of it. How would you go about tracing the license that way?

Thieves would likely wipe the laptop anyway so licence key is pretty much useless

I dunno, that's what I was asking. Imsure he has the licence key somewhere but can it be traced. I think along the lines of if the person connects the pc to an internet connection can he find out when that happens and from what ip address.

I pretty much told him to let it go that itd be wiped or even if not how can you prove what ip address is the ex employees etc

    It can't.

All you can do is keep an eye on Ebay, Adverts and Donedeal, maybe CEX as well, but it's unlikely you'll see it again.
