    Hi all,

    It's been a while since I've posted here. The list below is of a few upcoming events of interest.

    Oct 31st: Celebrate Dark Matter Day (www.darkmatterday.com), with a DIAS talk by Prof Luke Drury and Prof Brian Dolan. Details and booking at samhainagusscience.eventbrite.ie

    Oct 31st: The IAA talk this month in Queen's University Belfast will be by Dr Marc Sarzi on "Supermassive Black Holes: The DNA of Galaxies?". More details at www.irishastro.org

    Nov 2nd to 4th: Mayo Dark Sky Festival takes place. See www.mayodarkskyfestival.ie for more details of the very comprehensive programme.

    Nov 5th: US-based Paul Bracken, a Certified Leader in the Climate Reality Project (www.climaterealityproject.org), will be in Ireland to give a talk about the group in Theatre 029 of IT Tallaght at 4pm. All are welcome. Paul is from Dublin but is now living in San Francisco and is a former Coordinator of the Irish branch of the Planetary Society.

    Nov 5th: First of four films to be shown weekly in November as part of Christ Church Cathedral's candle-list film series. Opening movie is "Galileo" with an introduction by Prof Luke Drury. The other films are: Nov 12th, "A Brief History of Time"; Nov 19th: "Nostalgia for the Light"; Nov 26th: "The Farthest". All take place in The Music Room at Christ Church, start at 6:30pm, and admission is free.

    Nov 5th: Talk on "Space Illustration" by Pierre Carril. See www.astronomy.ie

    Nov 6th: A talk on " Health and Climate Change: A Febrile Planet?" by Prof Hugh Montgomery, UC London, as part of the EPA's Climate Change lecture series. Details at www.epa.ie/newsandevents/events/ where there is also a link to recordings made of previous lectures in the Climate Change series.

    Nov 7th: Prof Paolo Beltrame, a Jesuit Novice visiting Belvedere College, will give a talk on "Dark Matter", his area of research, at 7pm in the school. It's open to the general public but bookings must be made via mgrehan@belvederecollege.ie (Michael Grehan). Please indicate your name/number of tickets.

    Nov 11th: "Images of Starlight", the IAS exhibition of astrophotography, opens in The National Botanic Gardens and runs for three weeks to December 2nd. More details at www.irishastrosoc.org where you'll also find our other events listed. A telescope viewing night at the Gardens is on Nov 15th from 6pm to 9pm.

    Nov 11th: As part of Science Week, the IFI screens the movie "Let There Be Light" which is about the quest to achieve nuclear fusion. More details can be found at https://ifi.ie/ifi-science-week-light

    Nov 15th: Prof Luke O'Neill will give a talk at the Science Gallery about his new book "Humanology". More details at dublin.sciencegallery.com/events

    Nov 17th: "Let's Talk Science" Festival in the Rediscovery Centre, Ballymun

    Nov 19th: "The Irish Astronauts of 1991" is an event presented by Dr Niamh Shaw, BCO, and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. It brings together the four Irish astronaut candidates from that year who were selected for training at ESA.     Nov 24th: Talk on "Astrophotography" by John Dolan, IAS, at 2pm in the National Botanic Gardens. See www.irishastrosoc.org

    Nov 24th & 25th: "The Music of Zimmer v. Williams" will be hosted at the National Concert Hall (www.nch.ie). Their scores feature a number of Sci-Fi movies.

    Nov 26th: Next IAS talk is by Ronan Newman on the subject of Noctilucent Clouds. Venue is Ely House, 8 Ely Place, Dublin 2 at 8pm.

    Dec 1st: Talk on "Light Pollution" by Prof Brian Espey, TCD, at 2pm in the National Botanic Gardens.

    Science Week Ireland runs from November 11th to 18th this year. Details of the various events countrywide at www.sfi.ie/engagement/science-week/

    Look out for the release during November of a recording of Bowie's song "Starman" made by Jack Lukeman and the National Children's Choir. All proceeds will go to charity.

    Explorium (www.explorium.ie) is Ireland's newest Science Centre and opens its doors in Nov 2018.

    Each Tuesday, Dublin City FM (103.2) broadcast "The Astronomy Show" at 8pm. Presented by IAS member Ben Emmett and his team, tune in for the latest news on what's up in astronomy and space.

    NASA's Insight mission will land on Mars on November 26th after being launched on May 5th. It's primary goals are to study the formation and evolution of Mars, and determine levels of tectonic activity. The mission is also being shadowed by a pair of CubeSats launched at the same time. These are technology demonstrators to test CubeSat navigation and endurance in deep space. They will also provide real-time data relay from Insight during its descent and landing phase.
