When to buy

Hi guys....looking for opinions on my impending situation. Firstly brief context. Will be finishing up working abroad at the end of January and will need a car pretty much straight away when I'm back for work. I'll be back home for a month in early December before then and intend to do some research, test drives etc.

    My questions are as follows:
    1. If the right car was actually available, is it stupid to buy so close to the change in year?
    2. Being so close to the end of year, can more generous discounts be negotiated or are u better offer taking a punt that it will be still available and wait for the new year.
    3. Generally speaking does it take a while for prices to come back in the new year, maybe q2 say?

My gut is telling me that I might be able to negotiate a decent deal in December and that it might be worth buying then if the right car was available to save the hassle of panic buying as soon as I'm back and to avoid the need to maybe lease a car to tide me over if there's nothing around I like. But then maybe that's impulsive....I saw a savage spec '17 Alfa gulia that's just sold that I would have snapped off if it was around in December which got me thinking...

For the record, I'm a cash buyer with a budget of about 35k and looking for something like a 420d, 430d, 640d all GC or an Audi A5 sportback or Alfa gulia...would like to try and get into a '17....

Any thoughts or opinions? If people think it's not the worst idea in the world, would a car sourcing specialist be able to source me something specific in the uk for December? And recommendations on who to use?

Thanks in advance for taking the time to reply....

Used car prices don't suddenly drop on 1st January. Most dealers will drop their prices in mid November and maybe not again until February. Getting the best deal will probably be about timing rather than calendar month. Aim for end of month or end of quarter when sales targets need to be met so dealers are more receptive to negotiation. Being a cash customer you will still get better value buying in the UK than over here and you will have a wider choice on the cars you're looking for.

Regarding a UK sourcing company, I'd not be in favor of this myself as I believe your putting your faith in someone else choosing a car for you, knowing exactly what you want and don't want, and then paying them for the privilege. I much prefer to find my car myself, test drive it, get a good feel for it and then decide if its the car for me, negotiating the price and paying for it are just then the final steps. I do get that you need a car straight away but I'd rather buy a €500 banger to get me around for a few months while I find the right car especially when spending 35k, you want it to be right.

Thanks for the feedback....sounds like I wouldn't do any worse this side of the new year so that's good to know and ties in with my theory that it might work in my favour as a cash buyer.....defo hear u on the uk and have looked alright but I think it's more hassle than I'd be willing to take on, hence my interest in the sourcing option....might make a couple of enquiries.....looked up Charles hurst up north and by the looks of it you'd get into an '17 for around the same price as a 16 here, i.e. Around 30 including vrt for a standard spec m sport 420d which I'd be happy enough with at that price....point of sourcing would be to try and get a 420d with higher spec, e.g. Electric seat and Harmon kardon sound system...or a 430d for same price as 420d here....1st world problems!!!
