You going down for a look? I won't make it, but I hope to pop into the premier for a while.

I might, but only for a look. I've more than enough now for the winter. I met Sean before and he did me a favour, so that's why I gave it a plug.

Haven't met Sean in years. Used to have extremely docile stock.

He still has. I bought my bull from Séan and he's the quietest animal I have. He has some lovely stock in fairness to him. I'd pass them almost daily and have often stopped up just to have a look.

Sorry, it is a reduction sale. I get confused between partial dispersal and full dispersal sales. Mods can you change the title?

I only met Sean the once but we had a good chat. I told him I was only starting out at pedigree breeding and he was encouraging me to keep at it.

Anyone know how the sale went?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,128 ✭✭✭✭patsy_mccabe

Not great, and that's putting it mildly. I'd say 90% went tru unsold.

What prices were they looking for?

The breeding bulls sold but only couple of the females sold. Most of the young heifers were out of a Stock bull not Al.
I suppose potential buyers would be looking for big name sires.

What kind of money were the young heifers making Patsy

    2016 heifers were making 1700 to 1800. 2017 ones making 1600 to 1700.
All were by the stock bull and all the dams were by a previous stock bull. All very similar types because of that. Great stars all round. They were all good types but as said above, none by big name AI bulls.

Average prices but where do you go from there. Probably should have let off the 17 ones. One advantage of the stock bull is he has more calves on the ground and cows back in calf quicker. He has no air bill and no royalty fees. He was doing as well as ai breed going for 2k. Wonder will he feed them for the hook now?

I got a roasting last night for Heifers to. 650/750/950 for 300/400kg Heifers. What can you do. The whole thing is fcuked. Notting but dairy X scrap in the mart. Sign of the times, going to be a few tough years ahead.

Spent a while looking at weanling bulls selling in Gort before the sale. Saw one exceptional BB bull 300kgs struggle to make €1000.
Even the very best of yellow char struggle to make 900. And these were real good ones.

Is it not a bad time of year to have a sale like that? Personally wouldn't buy a cow/heifer to go straight into a shed but maybe that's just me. Much prefer to buy them in better weather & leave them off outside for a while, adjust to the herd/fields/stockman etc.

Was the trade poor? Was it busy? I had 8 booked in but decided against going.

Not going to enough sales to tell ya if it was good or bad. Quality was deffo good. Both rings packed as well.
I'd be tempted to sell there some time. Not that far from me.

Sold 13 bulls there in March and got on well. Lovely clean mart and the livestock are well managed. Much less stress on them. I like the way the auctioneer operates too. Takes no **** so there's less crap or scheming going on with the buyers.

You'd want heavy weanlings in gort. Not a good place for light stock.
