Quick question. If I turn up in rosslare in a new camper, will I get charged vat as well as vrt on it? Can't find a proper answer on revenue site.

    Thanks.

Vat is charged on vehicles under 6 mths and under 6000km as per revenue guidelines:

VAT on new means of transport. For VAT purposes a new means of transport is when a vehicle is less than 6 months old OR has travelled less than 6,000km. Click here for information on when VAT as well as VRT may also be chargeable.

    Cool. Thanks for the link.

The van is a year old but not registered. No miles on the clock. So presume it will be charged as new here. 23% and 13.3%!
Hardly makes it worth it now.

Put 6000km on it before you import it!

Its not 13.3% of the purchase price, its 13.3% of what Revenue think the Open market selling price will be!

Buy a second hand one one thats already registered and already has 6000km and spend the €10k plus you saved on actually going on hokidays rather than giving it to the tax man

    • If it's a new vehicle, that is you are the first owner, the dealer can sell it to you as an export sale and not charge you the French VAT, you pay the Irish VAT.
    • If it's not new but less than 6 months old and/or has less than 6,000km on the clock Irish VAT needs to be paid but you can claim back the French VAT provided the export is proved.
    • If the vehicle is over 6 months old and has more than 6,000km on the clock Irish Revenue considers it to be a secondhand purchase with VAT already paid so no Irish VAT need to be paid.

Yeah the french VAT is 20%. They want to be paid that in a separate transaction to the camper payment. After you pay the VAT in Ireland you can go back to the dealer and get it back. But iv heard this can take a very very long time. It makes a big payment even bigger for a few months.

    Thanks for all the replies.

If it's a new purchase the dealer should be able to make the sale as a VAT free export.
I made a new purchase in the UK a number of years ago and did not pay UK VAT, the dealer organised special export registration plates so the vehicle could be driven in the UK for a limited time before it had to actually leave the country.
AFAIK Germany has the same system, as Ireland does too, so I'd expect the French to have the same.

Just to follow up on this.

Plans changed and a second hand hymer is coming over from Germany on Monday. The quality of second hand in Germany seams to be very high.

Hopefully the vrt wont break the bank.

Congratulations and good luck with the new van. If you can let us know how you get on and what value the guys in Rosslare put on it compared with what you actually paid for it. Don't forget, loads of photos of your new baby.:)
