Petrol family car

Looking at changing wife's 06 petrol avensis. 2 car household with my car (Octavia VRS) been used for large journeys.
The new car will be used on short journeys (5-40mins) at a time and the odd 3hrs spin (not often).
Requirement to be sufficient size for family life, buggy/shopping/etc but not too large: not a second Octavia!
    Thinking of Focus/Golf type.
    Petrol version
    Budget been ~€12k.

What other options have I to reconsider?

Fabia? Might struggle subject to which buggy you have. Great small car for 2nd.

Ficus and golf boots ain't much to write home about.

Why don't you want a second Octavia? You mention Focus/Golf. Those hatchbacks will just about struggle to get the stuff you're looking to pack into the back of them.

Don't want a second Octavia as we don't want the second car to be the same type plus as we have the VRS version we would be disheartened with driving a lower powered version.

We have since started looking at hybrid options due to the regular short drive (5mins). Searching for a prius or similar sized motor.
